I need to choose between two SY022 Pentium 133 chips to keep as an upgrade for a Vectra VE 5/xx system - obviously I'd like to keep the one at the right (with all clean pins) and they both seem to work fine at 133 MHz, but I'm a bit worried about the many differences in markings. Is any of them a fake?

Thank you.

I don't think either is a fake.
Just one produced in the USA & the other in Malaysia.

Cheers

kosmo.. I know the left one is shiny but some OEMs use an oily heat-sink paste
so when you wipe it off it leaves the this type of finish on the chip

going through both.. the font top & bottom is correct for dates
markings are correct for production dates
production & die dates match

using a flash rather than natural lighting always makes chips look strange also

I was mainly puzzled by the font difference on the back and the different "format" of the "ICOMP INDEX" lines on the front, but if you say both are normal then this is good enough for me Smile.

the font is often different between plants
the font can even be different between production lines at same plant
the engraved font also changes with time as the lasers start to wear out

Intel changed from iComp to iComp2 during week 41 1996
also another to note is that Intel changed from (TM) to (R) logo week 27 1995

In respect to SY022s only
they were made Malay, A4 (USA) & Philippines
came in iComp & iComp2
recess marking in die cap came in iPP & i133

Thanks a lot for the extra info - I actually started a text file where I'll copy&paste all these bits of CPU-related information that I find throughout this forum Smile.

And, referring to your new thread, I'm not hysterical Very Happy, but I'm only going to keep one P133 for that system, and I don't want any surprises in the future...
