|
|
My computer is
Sony PCV-RZ30GN2
2.4GHz
512 cache
800MHz front side bus
SL6WF
Northwood
My mother board is
Sony part # A8115567A
I believe it is made by ASUS rev. 1.03
Socket 478 mPGA 478B
My question is what is the fastest Pentium 4 I can use to replace the orignal? |

| I have been to the Sony website but unable to find what I was looking for. Also I talked to them on the phone about changing the hard drive and the lady on the phone said Sony wouldn't recommend me doing the work myself. |

| I'm going to guess the fastest the board would support would probably be a 3.4 Northwood P4. (3.4/512/800FSB) I'm not certain how that board would handle a Prescott, but with the latest BIOS for the board, it may. |

It came with a 2.4 so if it will take the 3.4 Northwood I think I would be happy with ot . I would think I should be able to tell quite a difference.
I looked at the info on the Prescott and saw that they go up to 3.8 and have up to 2mb L2 cache. Seems that would be awesome if it will work with my board |

Pentium 4 3.8/2M/800's are socket 775, not 478.
They did make an Extreme Edition P4 3.4/2M/800 but it's based on a Gallatin core (not northwood or prescott). Compatibility might be an issue with that Sony. |

Not sure if you're still here but Prescotts (especially early ones) run very, very hot. Slightly more closed designs like Sony computers might use smaller heatsinks and fans and may not be able to cool a Prescott adequately.
They got the heat down in later versions but the whole fiasco led to the demise of the NetBurst microarchitecture and the development of the Core microarchitecture. |
