|
|
I have a home server with ridiculously old components.
The CPU/RAM/Mobo are going to be upgraded very soon, all at once, from its current AMD Athlon config, to an Intel sandy bridge. Don't want to/can't go much more than £130 [USD $200] for the budget.
I've set my eye on the Asus P8H61-MX super-cheap motherboard, but it's the CPU/RAM combo that bothers me.
What I'm thinking at the moment, is to get an Intel G530 - which I've heard are very suitable for a home server environment - and 16GB of DDR3 memory.
Bear in mind that the main tasks asked of this server are websites (with reasonably large MySQL databases), and a public Minecraft server.
Would that CPU be able to "handle" all the data in memory - or would I be better off going for less memory (say, 8GB) and a slightly better CPU? Another factor is power usage, which I want to remain as little as possible of course.
Cheers

| Personally, i'd look for a faster CPU. The G530 is an anemic processor, and with things like a Minecraft server (which can be very CPU intensive at times) and SQL, which in itself can be demanding, you're going to wish you got a faster chip. |

I disagree. The current CPU is an Athlon 64 LE-1600 - single core. It runs all the MySQL stuff and Minecraft with not much lag (4GB DDR2 memory also).
I think, compared to what it has now, the G530 will be a big improvement. It's a compromise between power usage and speed.
By the way, I've made my choice now, which is the G530 and 8GB of RAM. About to place the order. |

If it runs everything just fine, and you don't plan on doing anything else with it, then why upgrade? The question was answered before it was even asked.

I say "not much lag", but less would be better. Also, a larger MySQL buffer (possible with the extra RAM) is nice.
What I meant to say in the previous post really is that even though the G530 isn't a work horse CPU, it will still be a lot better than what I have. Sorry about the bad wording. |

You seemed to have no trouble understanding him, he must have been speaking Latin
As I recall from many many years ago it goes something like "desidero nudem puellum"

This is going to sound doubly-ironic, but by "bad wording" I meant "bad phrasing" - sorry about the bad wording, heh (Oh, and foreign people speaking in a superior manner to those with the language as their mother tongue is not a rare occurrence). |

If you don't mind paying extra $30 then Pentium G630T could be better for your needs. It's only a few percent slower, but it has much lower TDP.

Well, the thing is, I've already bought it and it should arrive within the next few days
I did consider getting one of the T models, but I really am strapped for cash (and am not the electrical bill payer, not that that means I don't care about consumption).
Thanks for the consideration though. |
