Hi all,

I would like to upgrade the RAM in my old computer from 256mb to 2gb. The question is what spec of RAM is compatible with an Athlon XP 2400+? Is is DDR 333, DDR 400 or something else? My motherboard supports both types.

Also would I have to change any settings in the BIOS for it to work with this new RAM?

Either is fine, DDR-400 would be better for some overclock... it'll be automatically set by the motherboard. Don't worry.

I think they sell only ddr-400, check e-bay for bargains.

Have fun. Be sure that your motherboard supports 2gb; those days they had only 3 slots and 1gb = 512+512+1gb

Bye Smile

Technically that chip would be fine with DDR 266 (PC-2100) but DDR 400 will fall back to 333 or 266 depending on the motherboard's DDR clock setting. My concern would be with the board holding 2GB of RAM. Lots of Athlon boards in that era had 2 or 3 slots, and were typically rated for 512MB per slot. That's not saying that a 1GB stick might work, but 1GB sticks weren't common in that time frame.

Both, thanks for your advice. I have an asus motherboard - A7V600-X which I believe is rated to 1024Mb per slot (and limited to 2GB in total for DDR400). JT sounds like there is no real advantage going for DDR 400 if it adjusts to run at same CPU bus speed but will look for chips on ebay to see whats available first.
