I'd say it's too early to put a price on the value of vintage cpu's. I mean come on, all of you base the value off EBAY auctions! How the hell would that work? Someone comes along and floods the ebay market with C4004's or C4040's, and all of a sudden they're not consideres rare anymore. Then 5 months after the flooding stopped, that same chip sells for $300 more. It's too volatile know much at this point in terms of value. Only the rarity of the item. |

I don't really expect to be interested (because I'm dead?) in the value in 50 years, 10 would be enough, anyway, there seems to be a limit of numbers in special versions/packages in comparison to other common versions.
George did a first stert, sometomen there will be a "Michel" for chips.
(is the "Michel" stamp catalogue known outside Germany? Here it's the philatelists bible) |

Yep, and not only listing Intel chips. There many more very interesting chips. The Eastern block chips will be the rare one... _________________ Frank. |

You hit it!
I'd like to have a counter for owners of chips (my interest would be up to early 16 bit, others might only want Pentiums;-)
Could Gennary create a sheet where we all could enter our treasures?
It would be nice to know how many grey C4004 or whar ever is in the hand of collectors.
The other thing we (maybe) could see then is, what I am wondering sometimes, how many collectors are we and how can I rate my own private collection.
Eg. my collection isn't online (forget about the old stuff on my website, haha), there are maybe 20 Collections online that I rate bigger than mine (Bigger in my mind! I don't care for Pentiums, other collectors don't care for a white 6502). And I don't know how many guys are in the same situation.
Maybe 200 collectors think they have the 21 biggest chip collection.
lil
Finally we wouldn't have a list from winner to looser but a transparent view through our collections.
My Idea for such a list would be:
All Intels with four digits (not only a tribute to Lee's famous collection:-)
All chips "worth to mention" from 80186 to newest like rare frequencies, ES, ...
All "first-CPUs" non-Intel
All "first-CPUs" of higher frequencies
Non-CPUs like early RAMs or interesting SupportChips (eg. Z80 PIO in white)
Interesting eastern Europe and Russian Chips + clones
Other mentionables, whatever it might be
...
I'd be happy to be the first to enter, just I am too stupid to create such a form:-( |

Personally I don't know anything about CPU's pre 386. Even if my first computer was a 8088 / Commodore 64. My collection is focussed on 1990 on wards the bulk of what I have being between 100mhz and 1Ghz.
I can certainly say I have the biggest collection that I know of in England - only because I don't know anybody else from the UK ????
I have just under 400 different CPU's... INTEL/AMD/CYRIX/IBM being the bulk of them.
There are probably no more than 1000 CPU collectors in the world - if that.. MAYBE - we should create a recognised organisation which would recognise us so our names could be cast in stone for when CPU collecting is recognised by far more people?
Now there is an idea... |
