I thought I had the only one. This one makes two which I means that mine is not a fluke.
Mine has the same vertical logo, same lot #, and even has (a single) drop of solder on the cap. I've heard that the solder drops were used by resellers to indicate that the chip had been tested OK. Sometimes they also used a drop of paint or nail polish on the package.
Christian Bassow got confirmation from Andrew Volk of Intel. that Intel did make these chips. It would seem that by the time Intel
started making these chips they were already obsolete and they were
quickly discontinued. The 8080B was made in Intel's, then new, Israel
fab plant.
Here's a link to a photo of the one in my collection:

I just noticed that the lot# on the chip in your photo is actually one digit
off from mine.
1253X vs. 1254X
So I guess that means while I no longer have the only example known,
I still have the earliest:) |

I dont believe it, a thousand and a half for an old Altair. Now I know why I never threw my silly old Altair out. It just kept following me around for years in an old cardboard box, actually I have two, but one has some missing PCB's. I never thought it would be worth that much, ever. I know of a few ppl in NZ that use them as door stops (almost ) Ohh well.. I will have to dig it out one day and fire it up. They are pretty boring, but VERY VERY educational when they came out.

Their price is usually much lower. This auction was special as it included three MPU boards, two of them with very rare processors (8080B and Z80), extra peripherals, documentation, and it belong to George Morrow.
As for 8080B it appears Intel also produced it with "C" prefix. I couldn't find any references to "D8080B". Does anybody have C8080B in collection?

Gennadiy,
Where did you see the reference for a C8080B? _________________ www.cpu-zone.com |

There was a reference in classiccmp.org mailing list, unfortunately this reference is no longer online. I also found the processor on usbid.com and similar sites. And, finally, I have one in my collection:
As you can see the package is quite different from other Intel white ceramic processors.

Wow
Congratulations!
Never seen one of those before, very unusual package.
However I ordered a Intel C8080B last week from a US company, probably the same as listed at USBid. _________________ www.cpu-zone.com |

Just when you think you've seen it all...
Just the other week I had someone send me a pic of an Intel C4040 in a purple ceramic package with tin pins, now this C8080B.
That's one of the things that makes chip collecting so much fun, you
just never know what's going to show up. Unfortunately, it also makes it extremely hard to catalog all the different package varieties. Everytime I think I'm getting close to have them all listed in my guide, new varieties
show up.
That C8080B is a museum piece and would have to
be one of the center pieces of your collection. |
