In protest of Intel always having 3-5 better processors in the works every time they release the So-Called latest CPU. I have maintained using my existing PCs till the bitter end. (that and the fact I NEVER buy Intel)
My Current PC is a ASUS with AMD 2700+
My choices are either an -
ASUS K8V-X SE Motherboard 754 AMD Athlon 64 2800+ (which I can use my existing ram, video card, and 4 IDE devices.)
Or an -
ASUS M2N Motherboard w/AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (which I will have to buy a new video card to use.
Thanks for the opinions.

i see little point moving only to the ASUS K8V-X SE system
as for other system... what sort of video card are you replacing?
a $2 or a $200 unit
I dont follow any particular manufacturer, but generally use Intels as they perform better for the work I do.
With regards 2nd hand market.. for the same price you can generally buy one generation newer in a Intel based system than with AMD technology
AMD systems are cheaper when new.. but it is the opposite after a year or even 6 months
So I am guessing you dont use MS products either? _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

If he wants to use AMD then why not? Yes, they are currently inferior by performance but the price/performance is quite good in general.
About the choices it is good to know how much money you can/want to spend. If you want to keep your RAM and video you can also try to look for Socket 939 motherboards. They support dual DDR RAM and some models still have AGP slot and finally they support some dual core AMD CPU models. Athlon 64 2800+ will be slow currently but if you were ok with old Athlon 2700+ then this solution will be faster. Socket 754 has also very limited upgradability. If you have money to change the platform, it is always better to look for current platforms. New RAM and motherboards are quite cheap currently. You can always look for integrated video if it satisfies you (Socket FM1 and upcoming Socket FM2 platforms). _________________ http://picasaweb.google.com/vezhlys/CPUsCollection |
