Core Microarchitecture/Netburst?

Hi.. I just like to ask some questions pertaining to these two technologies which amazed me somewhat. First: There are many LGA 775 motherboards which support core 2 duos and pentium 4s, pentium ds all at the same time. Core 2 duos are indeed more faster than P4s, if this is the case, why did intel not reduced the 31 stage pipeline of the prescott core so as to achieve more performance,(just like what they did in core 2 duos) low power requirement and low heat to these cpus? Intel just keep on increasing the clock speed at the expense of efficiency. Is this the nature of the netburst architecture? Is it possible for the netburst microarchitecture to reduce the deep pipeline of the P4s just to compete head to head with the athlons during their era? thanks for any comments..
