Sorry for the repeat thread- I wanted to subscribe to the topic so I had to make a new thread as a registered user. Can I drop a Pentium III Tualatin 1.4GHz in a computer that came with a Pentium III Coppermine 866MHz? It's a Compaq Presario 5010US if that makes any difference, and the motherboard is a BMW 2 (Tonka). I think the only thing i have to worry about is the voltage, 1.75 now versus 1.5 with the 1.4 GHz, but I've heard that the motherboard will automatically give it the right voltage. I think I need a new HS/fan also because the heat spreader on the Tualatin is larger than the Coppermine. Thanks!

I'm almost positive that system won't run a Tualatin core P3

Ok thanks, but why not? The voltage? If so, would I be ok using the best Coppermine I can find, I believe it's a 1GHz?

I had the Compaq Presario 5010US a long time ago, I think the motherboard was the same. Your best bet is SL52R. Coppermine cores only.

Ok great, that makes up my mind, but does anyone know why? Is it the voltage difference?

Because that board doesn't support Tualatin cores. It's not a voltage issue, it's a compatibility issue.

Sorry, but I think I have one last question. What is the difference between the SL52R and the SL5DV? Looking at all the specs, they seem to be the same chip.

They're both coppermine and both are the same stepping, so they should be the same.

Check

It shows all the sSpecs as well as the specs Smile
