| I didn't think any of the Nx586 parts had a built in FPU.. I thought it was always an external chip with them. |

That's a fantastic chip. I, too, thought that the faster NexGens were always with FPU included.
Do you by chance know where this CPU comes from? Tracing back the motherboard where this was taken from would be cool, because with CPUs >= 120 MHz there should be a newer BIOS version (p06y035f) that I'm desperately searching.
Regarding your statements: I think you are both right
It is true that the FPU always came as a separate chip. The FPU exist even as a separate package, although I don't know whether these were some kind of samples or actually sold. At least I never saw a motherboard for the Nx586 with separate FPU socket.
The NexGen CPUs with FPUs are all MCMs (Multi-Chip-Modules). They contain the Nx586 CPU chip plus the FPU chip, that's why the heat-spreader is so big. According to what I read on the Web it was IBM (the foundry for NexGen) which suggested to use MCMs instead of separate packages. |

| The first NexGen chips had an external FPU. It was relatively common. |

| The changed BIOS is not the only thing you'll need to make it run. In fact the cache chips should be faster. |

I wonder if it works? That would make a cool DOS gaming machine. To bad the motherboard's are so few and far between.. _________________ Pentium Pro Junkie! |
