Much nicer than the missile-in-range computer is this german desaster development:
The SETAC system was developed without NATO order or even specification from end of 60ies to mid eighties. Developed, tested, found bad and scrapped, lol
Development costed 300.000.000 DM back then and the scrapper paid exactly 15.150 DM for the trash. I read that one or a few units went to a computer hobbyist too. It seems this is one, if not THE one:-)
The bad thing was that NATO wanted one landing system for all NATO planes and airports. But before the specification was done some german hastily military guys and maybe some lobbyists thought they had an idea.
Finally this development did not hit the specifications and was just number three in a tender.
The time counter says about 68 to 69 hours used.
So many chips military standard 883B, all covered with lace, all looking brandnew, the seals were unbroken when i got the unit!
I mostly love the one board with the flatpacks:-)

and even more images
Seems like the cpu board (if it can be named such) was build from eight bit slices - does anyone have a clue which chips might hide behind the custom markings? |

no, no other 24 pin chips on the board.
=> not even that was the technology of these guys.
I bet the count of chips was an argument for a price then.
One deeply involved government delegate was the local representative of the area where the company SEL had their fab. He prevented the project from being stopped early.
And even late the reducing of orders by about ten just increased the price per unit by ten. _________________ You may use the photos I have posted here under CC BY-NC-SA license. |
