I currently have a T2400 Intel Core Duo processor in my Z61t. It only a 32 bit processor and I want to upgrade to a 64 bit which is a Intel Core 2 processor.

The Z61t motherboard

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lenovo details on my Z61t shows in the link below:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-64177#vid

•Available processors are:
◦Intel Core Duo processor T7200 (2GHz), T7400 (2.16GHz) ■4 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz front-side bus

◦Intel Core Duo processor T5600 (1.83GHz) ■2 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz front-side bus

Intel Core Duo processor T2300 (1.66GHz), T2400 (1.83GHz), T2500 (2GHz) ■2 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz front-side bus

◦Intel Core Solo processor T1300 (1.66GHz) ■2 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz front-side bus

----------------------------------------------------------
Can I use any of the 800 Mhz Intel Core 2 Duo processors or do I have stick with the 667 Mhz Processors?

What type of socket does my CPU uses M socket or something else?
I just found out it is a M socket!

How do I go about find the CPU plus socket - the Intel product code for it to fit my motherboard? Is their a prefix or suffix I should be looking for?

I been looking at possible upgrades and I am look at the T7600 (it the top of the line for 667 Mhz) CPUs.

Here are the links to T7600 below:

LF80537GF0534M is an OEM/tray microprocessor
BX80537T7600 is a boxed microprocessor

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_2/Intel-Core%202%20Duo%20Mobile%20T7600%20LF80537GF0534M%20(BX80537T7600).html

My memory is limited to 3GB with 2 dimms slots. If I upgrade to 64 bit CPU; can I upgrade my second slot from 1GB to 2GB and will the computer recognize 4GB because it now 64 bit? I personally do not think so however.

Also, were is the best place to purchase such items and is it hard to swap out? I think Ebay but are their other places?

What is the stock called for: PPGA478, PBGA479?? Is one of them the M socket(PPGA478)?

Thanks for any help you can supply! Cannot wait till the project is over with!

The computer won't work with a Core 2 Duo processor, only Core Duo.

core 2 duo is avaiable in socket P and socket M
T7600 (socket M ) might work

but you possible need a new bios to recognized it

looking at the specs.. the Z61t is limited to 3Gb (1 + 2Gb) no matter on OS or processor

I put less weight in that limit, because a lot of times manufacturers will post an advertised limit on 32-bit machines of 3GB (because the 32bit OS won't use more) but the board will actually support more. It'll probably show 4GB at BIOS and work just fine, but with a 32bit CPU, of course, he won't be able to use more than ~3GB of it. My concern is that his board won't even run that CPU.

Thanks for all the replies.

I made my purchase and decided not to upgrade the memory stick! Take one step at a time. Purchase a new fan motor so there will be a CPU and fan to make it a perfect pair.

Given the facts above and the new processor T7600 a 64 bit CPU and the limiations of 3GBs of RAM; should I install the 32 or 64 bit version of Windows 7 or 8?

Z61t is a relative old laptop
if i were you ,i would use 32 bit OS
because
64 bit OS use more RAM/Disk space than 32 bit OS
and x32 is more compatible than x64 in some case

below is my experience
i just upgrade winXP to windows 8 on my laptop for 1+weeks
which is lenovo SL400 ( core 2 duo T5870) with 2G RAM
i find when using
win8 enterprise (x64)
or win8 pro (x64)
the system might halt for 0.5 or 1 sec while using IE 10
and sometimes i even lost internet connection spontaneously
then i switch to win8 pro (x32)
it is complete ok now
my guess is the x64 driver for my netcard is not well writen
since your laptop is older than mine , you will probably get some problems like this

I done with my upgrades to my Z61t.

I made theses upgrades:

1. T7600 processor - new
2. new fan
3. Samsung 840 Pro 128GB
4. New keyboard and palm rest.
5. Windows 8 Pro 32 bit
6. New Intel Centrino dual band wifi card up to 300mhz.

Faster then most notebooks other then the MacBook Pro Retina series in regards to web surfing activities. Hard to believe it!

I still figuring out Windows 8! I go to the desktop for work and I am figuring out the how to use the IE10 on the tile. It cannot have more windows nor tabs. Very hard to get out of it and move to another website.

I go to the title side for a challenge. It quite the puzzle; spend hours in trial and error exploring. Kind of fun if you do not have to learn it for a serious purpose. I kind of like it now.
