|
|
Does anyone have an AMD Am486 DX4-100V16BGC, DX4-100V16*, or any other AMD socket 3 which is a DX4-100 and has 16KB of WB L1 cache? Can you check to see if it is 2x/3x or 3x/4x?
The AMD DX4 was more common with 8 KB cache, WB, or WT, however I am inquiring only about the 16KB version of the DX4-100. I would like to know if it has a 2x/3x multiplier option or a 3x/4x multiplier option. The DX5-133's had 3x/4x, whereas the DX4-100-8KB had 2x/3x. So what about the DX4-100 16KB chips? Were they really DX5-133's with DX4-100 markings?

| Thanks for your reply. You can check the Am486DX2-66V16BGC or Am486DX4-100V16BGC next week? The -66V is most probably 2x/3x; I am only interested in the -100V, 16KB version. |

OK. If you don't mind, could you also check to see how fast it can be run? For example, 2x50, 3x33, 3x40, 3x50, etc? I would be surprised if the CPU was capped at 66 MHz with such a late production unit. |

Ok, will try it with checkit and speedsys at the end of this week. |

| I thought all DX4's were a 3 X multiplier, as the fast 486's always had a 33MHz base clock, and the DX4 was a misnomer by intel at first, then the other mfgr's adopted it.. I remember AMD made a DX5 as well too.. |

| Some Cyrix 5x86 socket 3 CPU's had a 4x/3x option (2x-capable in software). The AMD 5x86 (X5) was 3x/4x-capable. AMD, Intel, and Cyrix DX4 CPUs are 2x/3x-capable. These CPUs came in different cache sizes and schemes (8KB, 16KB, write-back, and write-through). I am looking to see if any AMD DX4/5 came with 16 KB write-back cache and was 2x-capable. If it is 2x-capable, it is also 3x-capable, and if so, what maximum speed can it be run at? |

The reason why the DX4 is clock tripled rather than quadrupled as hinted by the number is that Intel planned to release chips with a 2.5 multiplier. These would have been DX3-63 and DX3-83. Presumably they relised that these chips were rather pointless and decided to not make them. _________________ General failure reading disk in drive A

Anyone else with one of these chips who is willing to test it? _________________ The only thing I hate more than straightening CPU pins is having CPU's with bent pins in my collection. |

To finish off this thread, I have now tested an AMD Am486 DX2-66V16BGC and it seems to function very well at 133 MHz (2x66) and 150 MHz (3x50). The chip will also POST at 180 MHz (3x60), but is not stable.
My particular socket 3, 486 board also has an 83 MHz FSB setting, albeit the signal is pretty weak and the clock swing is pretty far off from TTL levels. But alas, this little chip will run at 166 MHz (2x83), but I get some garbled characters on the screen.
My test voltage was 3.7 V, increased to 3.95 V for the 180 MHz test only.
Unfortunately, it seems I may never know for sure if the DX4-10016BGC has a 2/3x or 3/4x multiplier. |

I thought all DX4 were meant to be 3x and would run at 2x. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.
