I was wonder if that is true:

These processors are GUARANTEED to work with ANY motherboard that would normally support a Q9000-series Core 2 Quad.

!!! Please Note you may need a BIOS update before running this chip, depending on when you bought your board !!!
If your system can already rund a Q9000 -series Core 2 Quad, then you should be good to go.

Have anyone every place a Xeon CPU into a desktop computer?

I tried it often. I used nearly all Intel/Nvdia chipsets G33, P35, P45, G41, 650sli. Works well. Only differnce is Core 2 Quad has Trusted Execution.

Thanks Leon. I not sure what Trusted Execution does but if the Xeon is missing it on a server; it must not be too important!

Depends on BIOS. Maybe the latest support or may not. M<any things can happend.

Check manufacturer page for CPU support or contact via email with ask about compatibility.

And please do not double the posts.

Quote:
Are these two chips full compatible(can either be switched in the bios and still work)

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9700 3.16GHz 6MB LGA775 Quad Core 45nm 95W Processor

Intel Core 2 Quad Xeon X3380 SLGPG 3.16GHz

I want to upgrade my Lenovo M58p and it currently has a Duo Core 2 E8400!

I like to put in the Xeon X3380. Lenovo PDF said that the Q9650 is one of the cpu that will work!

What do you think?

Q9700 is in same process (core) only difference is cache size. BIOS on standard board should handle without any problems but IBM BIOS can display CPU mismatch problem and hangs on post screen. Ask IBM supporters because noone can confirm here.

Well, this ThinkCentre is a year or possible two after IBM handed off it's PC division to Lenovo. I think Lenovo might be less restrictive of bios compare with IBM and might have combined some high end machine types with their entry level workstations to save labor on updates and cost of expanding the varies bios combinations to keep it simple.

But I going give it a lot of thought and maybe I will just get a Q9650! processor and be all safe! Not sure for now since both Intel and Lenovo are not saying much to me as to what processor the updated bios actually support!

I going to buy it new or near new and it will be in January or Febuary the low months; so CPU prices should be down - at least consumer demand for them should be lower then now!

I decided to play it safe and stick with my CPU upgrade to the top of the line listed in the ThinkCentre specs: Q9650!

I have decide to try to do an "used" after talking with a couple of people who just buy upgrades - "used".

I will post back after installing the Q9650 and tell my experience.
