I have a stock LGA 775 Pentium 4 cooler with copper core which was accidentally got damaged due to severed wire. I went to a surplus computer shop to replace it, but the available stock was a shorter one with copper core which was intended for 65W 45nm CPUs. Since I have a 65W 65nm Pentium 4 Cedar Mill chip, does this shorter one works the same way as the taller brother? The taller one has a Delta fan (12V - 0.60A) which in my opinion spins more faster than the shorter one which has a Foxconn fan (12V - 0.14A). Shall I maintain the taller one or go with the shorter one? I'm confused which way to choose.. Any suggestion shall be appreciated.

For stock speeds, either one will work just fine.

i would be very careful about a situation like this. before you buy it, make sure you are able to take it back if the new part fails to cool properly.

i was in a situation like this once where the box said it could take on quad core processors but when in practice, the cpu would over heat when used more then light applications or browsing the web was done.

a shorter heatsink is rule of thumb worse at cooling. but if it does the job, thats what counts. also keep an eye out for other compatible heat sinks and fans in that same price range. shop around even online if you have some time to wait for a better deal to be delivered to you.

but all in all, make sure if the part fails to do what you need, that you are able to take it back. don't do anything risky. if you can't take it back then look for something that is sure to fix the problem even if it's a little more.

a little more to be sure is worth twice of not enough. just be cautious and dont rush a choice. stick with your gut, if it doesn't look like it will do what you need. there a good chance you may be right.

all in all i hope it all works out for you! Smile
