AMD Athlon Slot A problem

Hi,
I have this problem.

I am upgrading my dinosaur at resent. Currently running an AMD-K7500MTR51B processor in a Micro Star MS6167 board

I have the chance of a AMD-A0800MPR24B slot A processor.

My mate has brought the processor down, and he took me to this website

This shows that the MS-6167 board is only compatable with the K7 prefix processor.

got this info from a board programme:

Installed the processor, but windows xp wont start up.

Goes through the memory test, but then displays "File missing or corrupt"

I tried 10 times but same message, i either get the file message or it just cycles to the windows start point and reboots.

When I put the original processor back in, it booted up OK.

What do you think ??

Is it a compatability issue between the K7 and A0 processor even though they look the same, they are not ????
From digging on the net i found that the processor I am trying to install (the A0800MPR24B) is a ThunderBird version (i.e. on die cache as opposed to off die L2 cache).

I have no idea what this means, but could this be it, just not compatable with the board or do i need to manually change a setting in the bios??

My mate suggested reinstalling Windows, but i dont know.
The processor is recognised in the start up menu as a AMD 800MHZ

Any thoughts or suggestions

Windows XP will only boot with the processor it was installed with. In other words you have to reinstall XP with the new CPU.

(That does not answer you question about the compability of your new cpu, but if you get that far with booting there should be no problem)

afraid u will need to get a new board then.

If the cpu was not supported by the mobo, I think it would have not boot...
I think it is a software problem, and I think that you should test with a bootable cd (linux ?)

But it is clearly stated on that website that the board in question does not support that chip.

do the different athlons run at different voltages?

That would explain why it doesnt quite make it through to XP.

Perhaps it would manage 98...

Will start the internet search for a K7 prefix processor for my board. I know i should buy a new system, but the kids will kill it in 2 minutes (windows have recovered from aserious application error) every time i boot up and they have switched on, then off, then on....... looking for the nick jr site !!,

So as i am limping along on 500mhz, i thought faster processor, graphics card etc, will be a small outlay and a better system.


I dont play games, only internet, burn the odd cd / dvd etc , but all things now want a minimum of 500mhz processor. My ram ok as its 640MB but the processor will soon let me down.

Will list the "Thunderbird" on Ebay and sell it to someone who can use it

Ok, partial success.

Entered the bios and disabled the "exterenal cache" (due to the on die of the thunderbird)

Booted up, and WOW windows xp loaded. It started to go through its start up (anti virus, printer etc), then switches itself off and resets.

This process just carries on and on.
