If anyone has CPUs with removable die compartment lids (or EEPROM windows like those on MCUs) that they'd like to donate to me to photograph, please send me a PM. I'm after stuff that isn't otherwise a prime item for collectors due to badly bent or missing pins, badly scratched or cracked ceramic cases, too common to be collectable, etc. As long as the die compartment is in good shape, it'll be fine for our purposes.

Each donor will be emailed a photograph of their CPU(s). CPU collection sites (like this excellent one, for example) will be free to use the images if they so wish. The only restriction on the use of my images will be that they cannot be sold.

Colorful, low-angle lighting will be one of the improvements that I intend to implement in the near future (probably post-Christmas). However, in all cases, in addition to any possible "artistic" images of the CPU dies, a white-light, unaltered image of each CPU will be taken for the purpose of accurate, historical documentation of the true die appearance within its package.

I plan to come up with a homebrew macro setup to get even better at this until I do a big-time upgrade of my camera equipment next year (THE year, by the way, for buying a digital SLR because of all of the new players entering the digital SLR market in 2006 - more players = more competition & innovation in the relatively high-markup DSLR market segment). I'll be re-photographing everything then with the superior equipment.

Thanks,

Thanks, but I'd like to initially limit this documentation effort to CPUs & MPUs, items that are actually covered on CPU sites. I might eventually move into photography of more historic RAM, ROM, EEPROM, etc. but CPUs/MPUs should give me enough to document right now.

I don't have a great camera but here is a photo of some Intel X8050366 chip dies that were never set.

Does anyone else have any of these? Shocked Cool

I shipped you some chips. You should get them beginning of next week.
