It's revision of processore's core. Different revisions may have different new features, and usually new revisions fix one or more internal defects. E4 has the same features as E3 and E6, so processor performance is the same. AMD Athlon 64 3700+ with E6 stepping has 1.35V core voltage, while 3700+ with E4 has 1.35 - 1.4V, so the E4 version will run a bit hotter. Also, some revisions can be overclocked better than others.
