Hi all,

I've been reading up on my chipset some more to determine if it's compatible with a T7800 or T9500.

wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrino#Santa_Rosa_platform_.282007.29

I see a lot of names; Crestline, Santa Rosa, Santa Rosa Refresh, Penryn, Merom...

What is the difference between them? It's driving me insane.

Wikipedia has articles for Penryn relating to both an architecture and a family of Core 2 Duo processors. Confusing!

Also, is there a difference between 'chipset' and 'platform'?

Kind regards,
Dylan.

It may be easier to get a list of supported processors based on the chipset name. What chipset do you have in your laptop?

^ agreed. i figured you or one of the other knowledgeables would have a different and/or better approach to a request like this.

Funny that. That's exactly what's confusing me!

I assume I have the same as what Wikipedia says for Santa Rosa - GM965.

But all the hardware identification programs seem to say either GL960, GM965 or both, so I don't know which to believe. Hopefully you can figure it out for me?

- Windows 7 DXDIAG - dylricho.com/archive/x58l/chipset-id/dxdiag-display.png
- Intel GMA control panel - dylricho.com/archive/x58l/chipset-id/intel-cp.png
- CPU-Z motherboard - dylricho.com/archive/x58l/chipset-id/cpuz-mb.png
- CPU-Z graphics - dylricho.com/archive/x58l/chipset-id/cpuz-gfx.png

- Speccy motherboard - dylricho.com/archive/x58l/chipset-id/speccy-mb.png
- Speccy graphics - dylricho.com/archive/x58l/chipset-id/speccy-gfx.png

And, if that isn't bad enough, I see Crucial lists it with an SIS Mirage M672 chipset (terrible!), and I also see traces of "SIS" and "VIA" in C:\Windows\inf, so that's made the situation even worse...

I'll also include the processor information:

- CPU-Z processor - dylricho.com/archive/x58l/chipset-id/cpuz-cpu.png
- Speccy processor - dylricho.com/archive/x58l/chipset-id/speccy-cpu.png

Ironically, this processor isn't listed as compatible under either chipset on Intel's website.

I also seem to be having RAM issues (blue screens), which I was hoping you could help with?

Kind regards,
Dylan.

Okay, GPU-Z by TechPowerUp says the core speed of the graphics chip is 500 MHz, which would imply that I have the GM965 chipset.

The other programs are annoyingly confusing, and contradicting each other.

It seems to me that you have GL960 chipset. Some screenshots say "Mobile Intel 985 Express chipset family", but that doesn't mean that you have GM965. This family of chipsets includes GM965, GME965, PM965, GL960 and GLE960. Only two tools, CPU-z and Speccy, give specific chipset name - GL960.

The GL960 chipset officially doesn't support 800 MHz FSB. Based on what I see on CPU-Upgrade site, some people could run T9500, T7700, and other dual-core Txxxx processor, but nobody confirmed that the processors were running at 200 MHz FSB:

I'm running on 3GB of RAM at the moment. I thought the GL960 only supported 2GB?

Also, I'd assume if the T9500 worked on a GL960, the FSB would be underclocked as the GL960 chipset only supports a 533 MHz FSB. ASUS do list Core 2 Duo processors with 800 MHz FSB as options for my laptop, like the T5900 and T5800.

Also, GPU-Z reports 500 MHz clock rate on my X3100, which would make me assume the GM965 is present. And surely, Intel wouldn't get their own products wrong? Shocked

(my personal experience and 2 cents)
every time i have tried talking to intel they have failed in providing any decent information. not like miss a fact here or there but like out right don't know anything about my questions. (yes it has been questions about intel products. boards and cpu's.)

I guess that explains why the Celeron M 575 isn't listed as compatible with the GM965, despite me having used it perfectly fine for nearly 5 years.

CPU support lists for Intel chipsets are not always complete. It's up to OEM manufacturers to provide support for the CPUs that are not on the list.

I still think it has GL960 chipset, it's in the specifications tab:

http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/X58L/#specifications

At this point chipset name doesn't matter. The laptop specifications include T5900, so the chipset should support 800 MHz FSB. It's not clear if the chipset supports 45nm processors or not, so to be on the safe side you may want to stick with 65nm Core 2 Duo CPUs with 800 MHz FSB. The fastest one with 35 Watt TDP is T7800. Core 2 Duo X7900 is faster, but it also has higher TDP.

Well, I did contact ASUS about the specifications on their site. A support representative said that they were for the older models from March 2007. The manual that came with the laptop also says E3110-X (Mar 2007).

But here's the thing; a quick web search reveals that the E3110 is the ASUS X51L. So I have the manual for the X51L, but an X58L laptop. They do look very similar, so I'd assume they were all part of one series, and that's why; the manuals probably contain the same material.

- As seen here, I have the X58L:
dylricho.com/dump/x58l/ASUS-X58L.jpg

- And this is the correct manual, E4128 (Aug 2008):
manualowl.com/m/Asus/X58L/Manual/262467

^ That is correct because the PDF version I have on here says the same, which was downloaded from the X58L downloads page on the ASUS website.

Here is the manual for the X51L, which I have physically - manualowl.com/m/Asus/X51L/Manual/262435

The E4128 manual also covers the X58C. I believe the X58L is the most powerful/newest out of the three.

-----

And I was ideally going to keep away from the Extremes because I wasn't sure if the laptop could handle the 44 watts and power dissipation (max. 75 watts for X7900, 69 watts for X9000). Ideally, the X9000 would have been better, assuming it could handle the wattage and if it supports 45nm CPUs.

But my original instinct was to go with a T9500 or T7800. And if they didn't work, just get a T5900.

I don't know if you decided to go with T7800 or T9500. One possible solution is to get Celeron 900 from eBay. Here in US they cost $2 - $3 with free shipping, and you can use it to check if your notebook supports 45nm processors with 800 MHz FSB.

That sounds like a good idea but that'll depend on what the BIOS supports. Is there any way to open the BIOS and find out? I can't seem to find any BIOS programs that will open the file (including AMIBCP4).

I don't want to edit, I just want to see what microcodes are listed.

Dylan.

Just an update;

I have decided against the T9500 based on the fact that it costs too much (£90) as a risk.

Instead, the next one down (T9300) is my chosen CPU which I'll be paying £35 for as soon as I receive a reply from the seller. Returns are accepted if the upgrade fails, and I encourage others to make sure their chosen listing allows the same. This way, you can get your money back if it doesn't work.

But, considering the only difference between the T9500 and T9300 is the additional 100 MHz in core frequency per core, I think £35 is a great bargain. Of course, that's providing it works.

I shall update you on what happens, as it happens. Smile

Dylan.
