Hi, I'm using this board to learn more about matching my own builds.
Currently I have collated the best RAM and GPU for it (I think!), but am still a bit in the dark about whether my board will take either a Duo E8600 or 8500 as these are listed under still being tested for compatibility.
The 8500 listing says that the C0 stepping works, but there is no further information. Is this because I would have to upgrade my system BIOs in order for them to function properly?

Thank you for any help! Very Happy

the site says bios number 13 is what works with the E8500. using the E8600 would be a gamble i would think. it may work but also may not. it may work but with blue screens every once in a while or you may get lucky and it work flawlessly. there is no information with the supplied information to say it will or will not work. i would say considering these are 2008 cpu's that the company just moved on to testing other things. if they were still testing this cpu back then, surely they would have updated their information. you may try contacting them about this issue and see if they can give you updated information about your particular question.

personally i would stick with the E8500. it's only half a multiplier less in speed.

Thank you!
May I also ask if it is a good idea to wait until I have the new processor until I update my BIOS, I'm probably unnecessarily worrying that it will be incompatible with my current old chip thus causing a catch-22 situation.
I have a Core2 Duo E2160
Model F
Stepping D
Revision M0

I'm guessing I update the BIOS, switch off & install the new chip before re-powering??
Current BIOS information states..
Phoenix Technologies LTD
Version 6.00 PG
10/01/2007

that is how you would go about flashing a bios in order. but you would do this in the bios screen rather than the operating system, just to be clear on that step. i have never personally had to update a bios as all mine have been up to date when i got to them.

for your current processor the bios has to be version 10 or better. the e8500 processor section does not include any bios information so i would actually go about testing to see if the processor will work with the current bios version FIRST. the worst that will happen is the system will start up with a yellow/amber light some where and won't post. simple enough to turn off, put the old processor back and update the bios.
the computer may not turn on at all with out a bios update with the new processor. just make sure it's getting juice before you go thinking the bios needs updated. be patient and make sure thermal paste is well applied. a lack of that stuff will keep any computer from starting up.

Thanks Fenyal Smile It's all new and good advice to me, I hope you're right about being able to put the new processor straight in, it will be interesting to learn exactly how updating the BIOS is done, read a bit about it but you only really understand when you physically do it.
Thanks again!
