I don't know if you decided to go with T7800 or T9500. One possible solution is to get Celeron 900 from eBay. Here in US they cost $2 - $3 with free shipping, and you can use it to check if your notebook supports 45nm processors with 800 MHz FSB.

Looking back at this, would a Celeron 925 be a good one to test?

It should be also good to test it. These are usually a few dollars more expensive than Celeron 900, though.

That's good then. There were no 900s in the UK and I found a 925 for £4.85 which should be here in a few days.

The reason why I've changed my mind again is because someone else bought the T9300 at the last moment, and your method makes perfect sense anyway. Smile

Good news - the Celeron 925 works. Worth the effort, after all.

I also appear to be the only one on the internet who has actually tried a Penryn processor in the ASUS X58L.

It appears that changing the processor with more movement would require you to completely remove the casing to get at the heatsink properly. For reference, the thermal paste is Antec Formula 6 Nano Diamond.

I've attached some screenshots for your enjoyment. Wink

Well it handles several hours of Minecraft and the laptop was left on overnight. All seems fine. I'm not really one for benchmarking though since this laptop is really only for college.

A T5900 will be arriving soon. I'll have to try a T9300 at another time.

If my information is correct, the BIOS looks to support a lot of Penryn processors, assuming 0676 is the CPUID for Penryn. Don't quote me on that though - it would be nice to identify the specific microcode.

More news for you guys (and anyone else with an X58L)

The T5900 came today; the upgrade was successful.

Again, I'll have to see about a T9300 in a few weeks, and I'll let you know how it goes. Smile
