So, this PC has a SERIOUS problem with its CPU temperature. According to Bios, the idle temperature is 78° C. According to CoreTemp, the idle temperature is 58° C. Either way, 58° C is still a bit too high for idle. There is no overclocks at all. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I'm worried that the motherboard is causing this somehow.

Abit AV8 (Not 3rd Eye)
AMD Opteron 180
Decent Fan (Not sure of exact model)
2GB Dual Channel RAM

------
Thermal Paste is new.
CPU Fan hits around 4800 RPMs. (very fast fan)

i assume the fan is spinning and the heatsink is properly mounted?? otherwise check the BIOS setup for the CPU voltage and make sure it's set to auto..

Thanks for the quick reply. It's properly mounted, and the fan is spinning fast enough to cut into your finger. Very Happy I checked and the voltage is not set to user defined. (1.35V if I am not mistaken.)

Wow.. I just done a PassMark test and got 633 for the score. Normal score is 1253. What the hell?

might want to umount the fan and check to see if the grease has dried out then, or maybe the motherboard is misreading the temp..

That does sound warm, though as i recall some AMD cpu's have issues with core temp not reading correctly, though i think the opteron 180 wasn't affected by that..

Alright. I'll try that after I attempt to flash the bios. I heard that the Abit AV8 really needs to be flashed.

Flashing the bios works! It now detects the Opteron 180 with actual temperatures! Very Happy The bios now says 32° C.
