Ok, I created two new forums and added two sticky threads to Modern and Vintage General Discussion forums.

This place could be better if was USER RANK and two small forms :
1) to quick search
2) to quick answer to post

I know it's an old post, but I've got more requests for the first feature mentioned: user ranks. Do you think we need to add it to the forum, and if you do, what ranks we need to set up? Just to give you an example, AMD Forums http://forums.amd.com/ uses AMD family names as ranks, starting from 8088 (newbie) and up to Opterons (moderators). In our case it should go in other direction - from Opteron/Pentium 4 to 4004. Or maybe we can use package type - from plastic to white ceramic with gray traces. Or something else?

I'm very happy to hear that ! We can't start from Opteron because in next year we will have new product ... example ... Triton or else. In other side we can't start from 4004 because as we all know it is most rare chip.

I propose rank users same as processors : first processor was 4 bit so newbie user is 4 bit Smile 8, 16, 32 and last 64 bit

I have next suggest. Will not be a problem and much time to change search engine propeties ? Quick search is better when it search keywords in section when user is. I mean when I opening trade/sale forum and trying to search Pentium 133 I got results from all forums.

I have wondered about the same search facility that Marcin is asking about. I have often been looking for posts within a single forum, and sometimes I want to refine a search within the results returned from an initial search (eg if a search returns 10 pages of threads, I want to refine it and search within only the results already returned).

As for rankings, I like the idea but am not sure how it could work. How do you rate how "experienced" a collector is? Is it based on how long they are on the forum, how many posts, how many chips they have, what they know about them? Each of those would give different people a higher ranking.

For example, there are people who have been registered for years, compared to my 3 months, but have smaller collections, less knowledge and have posted less.

Different people collect for different reasons, and within those who collect for a different reason there will be different types of knowledge (for example I'm not the most knowledgeable about prices in general, but I am able to find info on most chips that I don't already know).

Also, we all know that some people ahve rarer chips than others, sometiems because of good luck and sometimes because of money. Does that give them a hgher ranking?

POoints like those all need to be considered, as a ranking shouldn't be considered a way of saying one collector is better than another for the wrong reasons. In principle it's a great idea, I'm just not sure without hearing more ideas on how it can work just how useful it would be.

Ranks? Not much of a necessity but not very annoying if they are present as well.

The 4-bit to 64-bit idea seems most appealing. But probably these five ranks would not be enough for us.

Up to you anyway, Genna.

Debs, phpBB forum rankings are based on the number of posts.

4 bit user to 250 posts
8 bit user to 500 posts
16 bit user to 1000 posts
32 bit user to 2000 posts
64 bit user > 2000 posts

In my mind it is enough Smile

Thanks. That means it's not something I have to think too much about.

Mind you, I just checked and in my 3 months on the forum I ahve the 9th highest ranking for the number of posts! That's one way of getting high up a rankings chart I guess Smile

Laughing
I suspect there will not be any profits additional laws etc having higher rank. That is only nice add-on. I saw ranks on other forums and many of them discriminate users. I think this type is acceptable for all Smile
