Here is the main site for this motherboard. I don't see anything on that page that indicates what its CPU upgrade ability is. Lots of information though, so maybe one of you smart guys can help.
oops, cant post the web site with the info if im a guest. just google this:
"VT8366-8233 specs"
its the first result. |

It looks like Via KT266 chipset, so the max FSB is 133 MHz.
The fastest desktop CPU is Athlon XP 2600+, specific part is AXDA2600DKV3C. Note the "C" at end, it designates 133 MHz FSB. There are at least 3 other Athlon XP 2600+, so get the right one. This particular part may be a little hard to find / expensive.
Some people were able to use mobile Athlon XP-M parts, but results were mixed. The right software was required, and BIOS support was not guaranteed.
Easiest upgrade: Athlon XP 2400+. It is almost as fast as 2600+, there is only one version, and you can still find it for cheap. |

Thanks! looks likes thats what i'll be going with. very cheap.
but since my last CPU is only a 950MHZ, should i get a new fan/heatsink as well?
my CPU and fan speeds are in my first post. |

There will be more heat to dissipate, about 65W for the AXP 2400+ vs. about 40W for the D950. You can therefore expect a higher running temperature with the same cooler.
Is a new hsf absolutely required? It depends on the cooling capacity of the current hsf. If it keeps temps below 65C or so, then it's probably OK long term. On the other hand, it shouldn't be too hard to find spare socket A hsf units. |

well the fan usually reads somewhere around 4500 RPM. my motherboard temp is currently 51c. hard drive 35c.
i dont see a CPU temp. im using "piriform speccy" to get all my info. fan speeds, temps, etc.
think 4500 RPM enough? or no. i found alot of heatsinks on ebay i could buy, but why spend the 10-15 bucks if i dont have to. (kinda short on cash) |

just found a program to check CPU temp. 51C at idle and at 100% load it only went up to 52C. (just played a youtube video for 1 minute)
i also read that the athlon xp 2400+ max temp is 85C?
hmmm not sure what to do here. i dont play games on this PC. just watch movies, surf the web, and watch streaming video from the web. thats it. |

The hsf capability is determined by several factors, including fan speed, ability to conduct heat from the CPU die quickly, and so on. You should probably just try the current hsf to determine if it is satisfactory.
85C is more like the max safe operating temp. My 2400+ ran much cooler than that, about 50-65C. |

one last thing. do you think i'll have to update the bios for this CPU to work
? my current bios is:
BIOS Type:Award
BIOS Date:September 26th, 2001
BIOS ID:09/26/2001-VT8366-8233-6A6LVH2CC-00
BIOS OEM:(AK31S2E9) VIA KT266A VT8366A+VT8233 - 6.00 PG
Chipset:VIA 82C3099 rev 0
SuperIO:Winbond 697HF rev 6 at port 002E
Manufacturer:Unknown
Motherboard:VT8366-8233
the VIA site has no bios updates that i can see for this board. |
