I read at Slashdot today that Stanford University is apparently attempting to create its own CPU museum. Never mind that I can't even visit the site right now, but this duplication of effort seems to be born of either ignorance of what already exists or just pointless competition. Why this "divide and conquer" strategy of the enthusiasm in a particular hobby? Why not focus that enthusiasm by partnering or collaborating with non-commercial "museums" that already exist, like this one?

It looks like they're creating a CPU database, and not a museum. The article at acm.org says that they are planning to have more detailed information in it, and use it for research purposes. Whatever information will be in this DB should be beneficial to all of us as long as it's not a copy of existing CPU databases, and if it adds something unique.
