some years ago I had the chance to get a Robotron EC 1835 (containing an U80601 CPU and an FPU) at a flea market for about €10. My car was too far away to carry it there... Too bad I didn't know about the rarity of its CPU then |
happens to us all! as I graduated in 1997, the engineering dept was throwing out *ALL* the old computers, there were skips ( those large waste bins than get dropped off by trucks for those who dont know what I mean by skip ).. .yeah.. so large skips FULL of everything that was more than a few years old. We could have taken what we wanted I can still see it now. |

to me Lee's arguments sound better.
As long as my chips are not destroyed by cosmic rays I love to see them driving an old computer. And testing chips is fun.
Wasn't it that what you preferred (in comparison to money), Jac? Collecting is fun?
I totally agree, I am sure Lee too.
Just everybody enjoys his own version. |

I'm on your side Lee, you have by far the most amazing Intel collection I have ever seen and must trawl though rubbish and Ebay like it's no mans business.... You HAVE to know what you are talking about.

Thanks Sammy, but I think JAC will think I lost my mind if he sees it. His point about collecting for fun and not for money is not a bad point but I have fun with my collection and I think what is the point of collecting if you don't have a goal. My goal will be expensive but I would love to be the first guy to collect at least one sample of ever chip Intel has made in the 1970s and I only lack less than 60 chip types to do that. That is my goal and so when a new chip shows up on Ebay that I don't have, I try and buy it.
The problem is that with the Intel Collector's Guide out now everyone else knows what is rare and what is common and you pay for chips that are shown as rare in that guide. Those grey C4003s are extremely rare and only two have surfaced and one of them got lost in the mail. I got the other one or I would be bidding. Of course I would wait until the last minute
I don’t think I have said anything negative about the way anyone here collects but it seems that anyone that spends a little money on an item catches some flack for it here on the forum. I wonder why that is?

Interesting I was only expressing my opinion. Not flack.
and yes, I am aware of Lee's extensive collection. It is impressive! I suspect not even Intel has a complete line up from that era. |

I dont read you as argumentative at all. As a phone company here in the UK used to say... " It's good to talk." |

Speaking of talking... You have to check out the auction with the Grey C4003s. Two new interesting developments. One the bid has went over $2.000 and George Phillips now has the bid. But was is more amazing is the email traffic at the bottom of the auction where someon is offering $5,000 for the auction if he will do a buy it now?
Is that you Frassl? |

I don't think the $5000 quote is gnuine - it's either somebody being sarcastic, or the seller asking himself a question to make it look like there is CONSIDERABLE interest _________________ 4000+ chips.

More fun to watch than a nude mud wrestling match at a Hooters bar after the Superbowl. Well maybe not? No, no ...definately not. |

LOL. And I thought porn was something you did with your old stereo (or the neighbours jewellery...) when you are short of money _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.
