Hi All,

I'm not a complete noob to upgrading PC (Done plenty of RAM and added the odd PCI Card. HOwever, CPU's always confuse me!

I've downloaded Speccy and my CPU specs are below

   Technology   32nm
   Specification   Intel Core i3 CPU M 380 @ 2.53GHz
   Family   6
   Extended Family   6
   Model   5
   Extended Model   25
   Stepping   5

   Virtualization   Supported, Enabled
   Hyperthreading   Supported, Disabled
   Bus Speed   133.0 MHz
   Rated Bus Speed   2394.5 MHz
   Stock Core Speed   2533 MHz
   Stock Bus Speed   133 MHz

      Caches
         L1 Data Cache Size   2 x 32 KBytes
         L1 Instructions Cache Size   2 x 32 KBytes
         L2 Unified Cache Size   2 x 256 KBytes
L3 Unified Cache Size   3072 KBytes
      Core 0
      Core 1

Is it possible to put any processor in to my motherboard that has the same socket config or is it a bit more in depth than that? as a guide i was considering something like this - http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i5/Intel-Core%20i5%20Mobile%20I5-580M%20CP80617005487AD%20(BX80617I5580M).html

THanks for your Advice

You left out the most important piece of information. Specifically, your motherboard. Once known, CPU compatibility can be determined by looking at the mobo support specs.

Here is a CPU support list for your chips:

http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_%28chipsets%29/HM55_Express.html

You shouldn't have problem upgrading to Core i7-620M/i7-640M. You can't upgrade to quad-core processor if you don't have a discrete GPU in your laptop.
