You can compare Collecting CPU's to Stamp Collecting and there are Millions of people worldwide and of all ages who are into Collecting Stamps. A Penny Black when new cost a penny and today is worth many many times that original cost. I think the same will happen with CPU's over a period of time. |
stamps are still in prodution.... you can see stamps everywhere ..and need to buy stamps to send letters.... a kid may see some colorful stamps on envelopes and be tempted to collect .... with cpu is a different thing....
you need a starting point for a collection.. you need to see how beautifull is a thing ... to have few and want many... you cannot start a collection based on internet pictures .. and for youngsters if they dont have desktops to change cpus and to notice that they are there is impossible... for they the cpus are only "something" with 2 core or 4 core like in smartphones.... and since laptops, tablets and notebooks, many of them didnt see any cpu but in pictures.... and even with desktops cpu to be honest theres nothing spectacular on a 478 / 775 sk. cpu....
with cpus is almost like animals in farms... at least here , even in towns 20 - 30 years ago every family was growing pigs and ckickens and you could see cows on the streets every evening when they came home..... now there isnt allowed that thing and kids need to go to zoo to see how they look in reality ... same will be to processors..... |
I disagree with you on this as we now live in societies where knowledge is freely shared because of technology that has developed over a very short span of time and also in throw away societies that can produce items so cheaply that it is easier to throw something in the trash and replace it with a newer and maybe more functional item that will again only last a short period of time.
However a good number of people still value older quality vintage items and I put the older CPU's into this classification. They will appreciate well over a period of time just as Quality Vintage Furniture, Paintings, scuptures, etc etc etc do. _________________ The Older they are the Better they are. |

i think our hobby came from longtime working with computers (for some of us from the beginning) and i doubt that many of nowadays kids will digg enough to love them.... and one reason could be that desktops market is dying ... and laptop's cpus arent rally eye candy .... theres nothing on a laptop cpu that could make you love it )) |
I think so. Kids hardly see a CPU in their laptops, tablets or phones. Nothing to upgrade, change or set. Game over. They will probably collect phones or game consoles. BTW, are there any young collectors here at cpu-world? |
I'm not sure but I guess Hardwarecop is young |
You should've identified my age according to my frequent use of smileys?
Well I was grown up with laptops and BGA CPUs but still found deep interest on vintage beautiful packaged ceramic & gold CPUs. And also I really do hate "ugly" modern CPUs packaged in plastic soldered to motherboards - they're not worth collecting. Collecting CPUs is more like collecting something beautiful - like shining coins or gems, not collecting unaesthetic mass produced plastic
Regarding the value forecast I'd say that CPUs will definitely get (much) more expensive in the next 10 years since the recycling process is going on (and maybe more and more people discover the beauty of vintage CPUs). When I was randomly navigating through the CPU World forum, I came across the first sale threads on the forum. Back then (around 10 years ago) an common AMD K5 was sold for $3 - today we pay 3x (CPU world) up to 5x (ePay) the cost. So I might (partly) apply this on the next ten years for those CPUs too:
Common 486: Today - $5, in 10 years - $10
Common Pentium Pro: Today - 25$, in 10 years - $40-50
NexGen: Today - $80-100, in 10 years - $150-200
C4040: about $1500 in 10 years, I don't know
But I think keeping one C4040/C4004 is the best investigation though and guess what: it's just ONE chip. No need to carry as much as 100 486s _________________ Check out my museum project with more than 1500 CPU pics: http://www.cpumuseum.jimdo.com/ |

I have the similar view so I voted for the Pentium Pro.
The main reason is "I love Pentium Pro". I believe other collector will voted for it too so the price will be up in 10 years.
The interesting history make Pentium pro more attractive. It is the first Server/workstation cpu Intel intended to make. Besides, I love its huge size.
Size Does Matter.

I think we should be compared to tube collectors, not stamps collectors. They are still alive even tubes aren't manufactured for decades And old computers collectors, I'm not sure how it's looks like in other countries but I can say we are in "boom time", here in eastern europe, in old computers collecting, retrogaming and many "retrocomputertechnology" things.
I'm almost sure that golden era for cpu collecting is beyond us, not behind _________________ --

And look at the nixie revolution. Lots of people building nixie stuff, but i'm sure 15 years ago there wasn't much interest. _________________ My former Intel collection:

I think keeping one Intel C4004, preferably one with gray traces, is a better investment than one C4040, or 20 pcs of PPro, or 100 pcs of common 486. As the first CPU, it has a potential to be sold by one of those big auction houses, like Sotheby’s, for much more than a couple of thousand dollars.

Give a gray trace C4004 another 30 years, and I'm sure they will be as Genna said. Look at all the stuff being auctioned for big prices today _________________ My former Intel collection:

The most funny part of CPU collection is the uncertainty of the future price of CPU.
I really want to know the future price of all vintage cpus when we all become the old man. (I don't know will I still alive in the next 30 years. LOL) |

I don't think so. I'm 42 year old this year.
(I just discover I have been a cpu collector for ten years, I should open a party to celebrate it). |

not a big deal.
Just don't forget to update your avatar when you've turned 92
P.S. will be 42 next week too _________________ My Want List: http://www.cpu-world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22729
