Ok, so I finally decided to upgrade the CPU on my laptop. In the meantime, I decided to upgrade CPU on my backup laptop as well. It's a Sony VGN-N110G (currently Intel T1350). Given everything I'd learned in researching the first upgrade, I decided upon the Intel T2130. That jumped me up to a dual core AND gave me virtualization (my primary reason for the upgrade). Before I took the Sony apart, I decided to update everything on it and I noticed it only had 1.5 gig RAM. I looked up the specs on my laptop and it said the max ram was 2. Unfortunately, without opening up the laptop, I'm not sure of the motherboard (CPU-Z just says SONY). I've seen this same CPU with 4. Will I be able to upgrade the RAM to 4 with the new CPU? Or, is that motherboard-dependent? Or both? Oh yeah, 32bit Vista. I already bought the T2130, but it was CHEAP.

I got so many bad answers when I was trying to upgrade my everyday laptop. I hope I have better luck this time. I just realized I may be able to use the RAM in my main laptop to test this out. But, I'd still love some input so that I can understand this all better.

It's motherboard (actually chipset) dependent. Any pre-Core-i-series Intel CPUs have the memory controller in a seperate chip (the northbridge) which dictates the memory type/speed/amount.

CPU-Z should show you which chipset the laptop uses on the "Mainboard" tab.
Alternatively, yo can use something like AIDA64 for detailed info on just about anything in there.

According to the Sony spec-sheet, it uses an Intel 945GM.
Depending on which one it actually is (945GMS or 945GM/E), it either supports max. 2GB (I assume 2x 1GB) or max. 4GB (with limitations).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Core.2FCore_2_mobile_chipsets

Those maximum RAM figures aren't always accurate though. For example, the 945GSE is limited to 2GB RAM, but they fail to mention that it's the limit per RAM-slot. Almost all netbooks using this chipset only have one slot, but the majority of laptops using the other related 945Gxx chipsets have 2 RAM slots.

Another example is my old main PC. The board uses the Intel P35 Chipset, which is officially limited to either 8GB DDR2 or 8GB DDR3 (with 4x 2GB modules respectively).
Thing is: at least for DDR3, that's wrong. I'm using 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 with that chipset and it works perfectly fine (and has done so for a number of years). If my board had 4 slots for DDR3, i'd try 16GB (4x 4GB). Would most likely work fine too, as the chipset is obviously capable of adressing 4GB per slot.

Enough off-topic rambling for now.. Wink

Thank you so much for your most excellent reply. I'm sorry it took me a couple of days to get back to you. I didn't consider the additional info as "rambling"; it was GREAT! In fact, I may have some additional questions, but I wanted to tell you that, at the very least, it answered my main question.

I did download the program you suggested, but I haven't put it on the laptop yet. In fact, I haven't proceeded on any of it yet, including the upgrade on my main laptop. Even though I've taken apart many laptops, I'm hesitant this time.

I just wanted to say thanks and I hope you can answer some additional questions when I get a chance to write more.

I decided to go ahead and put in the new CPU in my Toshiba A305-S5872. I took it apart, cleaned the heat sink and fan (boy was it dirty) and installed the new chip. When it powered on, the new drivers installed and it's working great. And, boy, is it quiet. My problem is with the fan. I downloaded programs to check the temp and it's staying normal (below 50 degrees Celsius), but the fan isn't kicking in. I tried downloading SpeedFan, CPUID HWMonitor and AIDA64, but none of them showed my fan (at all). When I go into BIOS, there's no hardware section for the fan. I checked and the driver for the fan is working properly. The fan kicks in for a second or two when I first boot up, but never comes on. But, like I said, the temp stays normal and even goes down while I was watching the different monitors. For different reasons, I ended up taking the laptop apart three times when I installed the new chip and I really don't want to have to keep taking it apart (and risk damaging something). Is this normal for the fan to not run if the temp is staying normal?
