My advice - never add up how much money you have spent, otherwise you might find yourself being taken to hospital in an ambulance.

For me, I do not want to add up, as I have around 3000 Intel CPUs/FPUs (many rare) and about another 500 non-Intels...way too much money!!!!

Do you have any chips that have duplicade or triplicate the value that you have spend?
Can you give me a opinion or a tip for the best bargains today that maybe in 5 years duplicate or more the price?
get 10 pentium pro for 250usd ? or 10 next gen?

For me, I count every CPUs with precisely costings. I.e. buying costs and shipping costs.

It is quite funny to see the buying history. E.g. Buy a CPU at usd1 but the shipping cost is usd24.

More funny parts is the calculation the profit or loss when selling CPUs.

Recording the costs will give me indication for the next pricing.

Please ask yourself a question, for fun or money?

If for fun, just buy you most desire CPUs. One of my collector friend only buy Pentium pro CPU because he only like them.

I collect cpus that are interesting or look nice. That is why I like chips from the 286-early Xeon era. They are often very nice looking chips. Modern chips like socket 775 and newer all look pretty much the same and so I will not be spending much money or effort to get them - with the odd exception. Especially in the 486-Pentium range, manufacturers put much more effort into making their chips look nice.
The same goes for early cpus such as 8086 and earlier DIPs. They all look much the same too - unless you go right back, then they get interesting with white ceramic and grey traces - but at high prices!

I shudder to think how much I have spent on chips although some of it is offset from chips I have sold.

I love the alphas decs sparcs and the pentium pros, for me they are most beatiful chips around. for my i never looked to dips with attention because as you say they are very similiar but last friday i get 2 ti tms 9900jdl from a lot...and they change the way i look to dips. and now i have one more drawer to fill with a new kind of chips.
The new modern plastic era with small cores and cheap materials to reduce costs dont produce any great looking ones. If they exist i dont know then..

Yes, sometimes you get lucky and pick up a rare cpu for a cheap price. I know with some of mine I could get 10x what I paid (and many others on the forum could get the same return), but I do it for the fun, not profit.

Gold cap pentiums and Pentium Pros are some of the nicest and probably more sought after, but I also think 486 overdrives and Pentium overdrives will continue to be well bid. But, the biggest returns are from hard to find ones, or engineering samples - some engineering samples are now fetching 5x what they were 3 years ago

I collect CPUs from the times when I was repairing and building computers, mainly desktop machines, but also some laptops and servers. Mostly 486 and Pentium/MMX/II/III, but also 286/386 and newer ones (P4, etc.). Oldest are 8086 machines so these are also oldest CPUs I collect. And to be honest, I don't have enough money for (some) older CPUs. Very Happy

I also count costings, at the moment I have spent more than 1 000 euros in this hobby. That sum includes also some old motherboards, RAMs, etc., but mainly it's used in CPUs.

there is any easy way to understant and spot if a common cpu its rare because of a unsual Part number or stepping ID.?
I am afraid that sometimes i discard cheap buy of a common 486 and in the small letters...its a rare item and uncommon spec...

Dips are beautiful: plastic, ceramic silver cap, ceramic gold cap, white silver cap, white gold cap, white grey traces... and are the oldest.. its impossible not to love them...

There are some in the DEC PDP line that are (MCMs on DIPs)
