Dear Forum,

I am unsure about how ignorant this question is.

My friend has bought a stack system from a local shop, and they gave it to him "ready" - drivers were already installed.

He had a problem with XP and so maybe I will need to install a newer operating system. So the question of drivers comes in.

From Help and Support -> Tools it tells me that his processor is

AMD Athlon (tm) II X2 270 stepping 3

does it need a driver? Where can I download the driver?

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best,

BillZ

Nope, CPUs don't need a driver. Cause they're the real driver for drivers to other devices Smile

Antimony,

Thanks for this confirmation.

I see drivers for chipsets, are they the same?

Hope you are keeping well,

The chipset is part of the motherboard. You will need the motherboard drivers, which you can get from the manufacturer site, and graphics card drivers.

Like debs3759 said, you can get them from the vendor's site. You can figure out the motherboard model either by looking for it on the PCB or by running an utility called CPU-Z.

Dear Debs/Antimony,

This helps - thanks. I have downloaded CPU-Z and will look for the motherboard to get the driver.

I don't usually work on stack systems, I use laptops. With laptops you type in make and model and are given a hole string of drivers to download.

Graphics card - would that be NVidia GeForce GT 430? (help and Support ->tools)

As far as I can remember, there were special drivers (OS patches) for some AMD dual core CPUs under Windows XP.

Windows 7 doesn't need any CPU "drivers" - only the drivers for the chipset are necessary.

I used CPU-Z and found that the motherboard is Asrock N68-VS3 FX

I have downloaded a number of drivers so I am now prepared. thanks for all your help.
