Alright, so there's the whole nice list here of the P3 mobile chips. Some are "Micro-PGA2" and some are "495-pin PPGA."
I've got an SL4JX P3 600, which is listed as a Micro-PGA2. It's from a Compaq Presario 1700 that I'm thinking about trying to upgrade. P3's are cheap anyway.
Question is - Micro-PGA2" and "495-pin PPGA" - are they the same thing? Intel's website doesn't seem to compare the two directly, and their P3 mobile spec page only seems to discuss 478-pin designs. |

I think 495-pin PPGA is the same as micro-PGA2. Pentium III mobile processors were produced in two packages - BGA2 and micro-PGA2, there was no another PGA package. Also, micro-PGA2 package has 495 pins.

| In that case, I'd guess the BGA2 package is the one with 478 pins, correct? |

Ah, right, duh. BGA. Ball grid array.
Well I guess as the end of the semester approaches - when I'm headed back home - I'll buy a nice 495-pin P3 on eBay and see what it turns out to be.
Of course, I don't know for sure if the laptop can take an upgrade. It's a Presario 1700, think the model is 17XL360. I did manage to improve the cooling system - it used a thick thermal pad between the processor and heatsink. I replaced it with a tiny copper sheet, with Arctic Silver on either side. I also put AS between the heatsink and the shield that fits underneath the keyboard, so it now acts as a large heatsink. The CPU fan hardly even needs to run anymore. I think/hope that going from a 600MHz P3 to maybe 1GHz won't be too bad.
But I need to search the tech specs to see if it'll even boot with a different processor. Assuming the specs even address the matter of a processor upgrade... |
