upgrade from AMD Duron processor

I have a laptop (Compaq Presario 700 series) and the processor has went bad, so rather than get another processor at the same speed (1GHz) I figured I'd upgrade after this site gave me a bit of encouragement.
I want to get a good reliable processor for this socket 462/A motherboard, and on eBay I found that I could upgrade speed for the same price as staying with the same processor.
So on to my question, what processor(s) can I put on this motherboard with no compatibility issues, and will give me the best "bang for the buck".
The motherboard model# is A0061 if that may help, I want to keep my spending between $60-$100 so of course this will likely exclude any new units, but your suggestions are welcome.

Well...I'd personaly try to go for an Athlon (scrap the Duron)

You can mount Athlon XP 1400+ 1,2 GHz FSB 100 MHz.

I found next info. Your notebook based on VIA KT133 chipset that support 100 and 133 FSB. So propably you can mount max Athlon 1400 but not in 100% sure. Athlons XP from desktop example 1500+ is not supported.

or should my guidelines be 1400 or less, 100-133 bus speed and and what particular family of the socket a processors? which was most reliable in a laptop?

I bought this processor: A1200AMS3B and both laptops will not boot up off of the new processor, what gives? Any suggestions are welcome

If you can test the processor in another computer or motherboard see if the processor works. Another suggestion - see if the motherboard has any switches for processor voltage. If the board has the switches then set them to 1.75V. And the last thing - how did you determine that it was a problem with the processor, and not with motherboard?

well I determined it was the processor because I have 2 of the same laptops and when I switched the processor between the two the known working one would give the same problem as the broken one, the new processor wont work in either, power light comes on but wont go through the boot process. Before, it would start booting up then shut down about when it got to the sign on screen (it would get hot in that short of time) Is there incompatibility issues between the duron and athalon processors? you guys are my last ditch effort because I think I got a DOA product.

Hm, Duron and Athlon should be compatible. I don't know of any motherboards that support only Durons or only Athlons. In your case the problem may be that you're trying to use desktop processor in the laptop. Desktop processors require better cooling, so it's possible the processor overhats because of inadequite heatsink/fan in your notebook.
