It isn't a Ignitron, it's a three phase mercury arc rectifier. This kind of tube was the first industrially available and successful high-current "solid state" rectifier. Here in Europe it was a fundamental keystone in development of DC-powered railroad traction. The picture shows a relatively small rectifier: the large ones were constructed in full metal (capable of handling DC currents of **many** thousands Amperes). A piece of industrial history. |
