So decided to install windows 10
I have been running the same windows 7 install for 7+ years, cloned onto a SSD 6 months ago, lots of 'odd' things from being 7 years old, like IE cache no longer functioning, windows update died when I cloned the disk, among other things.
Installed Windows 10 update tool, clicked next, 30 minutes later, windows 10 running. I had to install new GPU drivers was all, everything else worked great, all weird Windows 7 probs I had, gone
No errors, no weirdness, I expected to have to do a clean install of 10 haha
If Microsoft wanted to make Windows 10 adoption easy, I think they are off to a decent start LOL _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

Strange - a colleague at work tried to install it over Win 7 and it trashed his system. Complete wipe and install required. _________________ best rgds.

Free upgrade if you upgrade within 1 year of its release.
If you want to upgrade after the initial year you would need to pay for it like before.
They haven't announced how they plan to transition to subscription pricing yet. _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

Oh I am sure there are some that will have issues
The most common ones I have seen so far is Synaptics and Elan track pad drivers, both companies made some terrible drivers, fixed by rolling back to the older ones (which Synaptics already did)
There are some various quirks in Windows 10 that I am sure people will find annoying (talking to smithy, he had a list, and I have found a couple) But that seems to be normal for any new OS _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

I'm getting impatient waiting for my download. Also wondering if the download will work for reinstalls after the year is up. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

There's some synchronicity - I also decided to try to upgrade to Windows 10 yesterday. The upgrade target is a compaq notebook from 2010, with lots of HP software pre-installed.
After the download finished, it took about 2 hours to complete the upgrade (it has no ssd, just a hdd). Hardware drivers are mostly OK, except Synaptics touchpad doesn't scroll. Even the printer driver is OK. A few programs didn't make it, but the programs that I use most are OK. CPU-Z had to be re-installed. Easy. |

if you mean the auto download from microsoft is too slow
try this
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
you can download windows10 directly by this tool
by using this tool , you can create a windows 10 ISO for DVD or USB disk
this is not a standard upgrade procedure
before tring it , it is better to backup your system
be careful that
@ be sure you download the right version
@ choose "upgrade" not "install"
@during the procedure , you might need these general install key
| Quote: |
"That is the generic key. Here are all generic keys:
Windows 10 Home : YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7
Windows 10 Home SL- : BT79Q-G7N6G-PGBYW-4YWX6-6F4BT
Windows 10 Pro : VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T
Windows 10 Pro VL-MAK : QJNXR-7D97Q-K7WH4-RYWQ8-6MT6Y
If you have already upgraded to Windows 10 and it is activated,
DO NOT reinstall using one of these keys. Just skip the key entry process
and it will activate automatically."
|
after the upgrade procedure , your windows 10 will be activated (it some times takes a few days ) and microsoft will give you a new key
@clean install only after you have your windows 10 activated |

hi debs
it is not a standard method
some ppl report to have windows10-activate problem by this
my guess is wrong version of windows 10 installed (this tool is not smart enough )
it is better to backup your win7/8 before using it |

I was offered Win10 today as well but my Win7 works flawlessly. Very reluctant to change a perfectly working system. What benefits do you get with Win10, other than that they will eventually stop updating Win7 sometime in the future?
Going from ordinary drive to SSD, how much better performance did you get using Win7. And how big SSD drive are you using? Tried it a couple of months ago and cloned my harddrive over to SSD but did not get the SSD to boot.
That is also a tip to people that have a working system that they are afraid to tamper with. Clone the drive over to another Harddrive. Make sure the cloned Harddrive is working and update this drive to Win10. If updating to Win10 works, you can keep the old drive as a backup. |

Yah it will, it actually uses a generic key + your hardware ID, so say you upgrade your system, then want to do a fresh clean install, you can burn a disk/USB and boot/install it (as long as your hardware hasnt changed significantly) _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

My only hardware change will be the 4 TB drive I just bought for all my torrent files (1 TB just doesn't cut it any more)
I usually reinstall the OS twice each year, but am seriously considering saving a disk image next time, so after installing and updating I will have an activated disk image for future installs of this system. The OS is on a 100 GB SSD, plenty for the few apps I use and an amazing speed boost compared to a 1 TB HDD.
I have been using Win 7 for almost as long as it's been around, am expecting 10 to be OK. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

I'm downloading now.
I checked the Gigabyte website for updated drivers, and the only Win 10 drivers for my motherboard is the audio drivers. To save me wasting my time, will that mean I don't need drivers for chipset, networking (Realtek, this device is obviously among the most important) and USB? If it makes a difference, the system I am upgrading has a GA-A75-UD4H motherboard. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.
