i7-6700HQ vs i7-3820vs i7-3820QM

I'm a newbie... I have a 3+ year old laptop with an i7-3820QM. I've been shopping for a new work laptop.

While I recognize that desktops are going to be more powerful than desktops -- a desktop isn't an option for work.

I'm looking at some replacement machines. The best chip I've seen in a laptop so far is a i7-6700HQ.

Can anyone explain to me why a chip 3 generations newer seems to have lower performance ratings than the newer one?
