|
|
I need to take this big heat sink off of an IBM S/390 processor.
The heat gun I have doesn't seem to get the heat sink hot enough
to release it from the CPU like the others I have removed in the past.
Any ideas?? |

| I first used a dremel to remove the fins as they where radiating off the heat from my torch. Then I torched the remaining part of heatsink until it came off. |

Pull the unit, use a bench vise and
set the heatsink under stress -> force bending it!
When it bends one side of the heatsink will spread apart
from the MCM and you now can usually remove it
completely by hand with some force!
Wear eye glasses and gloves!
Hold the MCM with one hand in case it will be completely separated by
bending the heatsink so it will not fall to the ground and
split in several pieces
Hope for a picture of the MCM after successful work!

| I used method similar to doccy's many times for glued heatsinks on 486/P1, always successfully! |
