On the 23rd of this month I turn 65 and the government starts paying me superannuation even though I will still be working and intend to keep working until I turn 70.
I used to be a seller but turned into a collector and joined the forum in 2006 I think.
I am still collecting CPU's and intend to do so into the future though I tend to mainly collect Pentium Pro and older CPU's _________________ The Older they are the Better they are. |

I'm 28. I started collecting CPU back to 2002, when I was in high school. Vintage CPU were so cheap back to then. I remember I bought most of my collection(386, 486 and Ceramic Pentium) about $1-$2 equivalent.
Here are some photos I took in 2005, just before I came to Australia. Then I stopped collecting for a while. I started again in 2010. _________________ Want List

I totally love both the 386 ES and 486 ES from Hugo on eBay right now, but I will not pay $300 or $500 for them anymore. I can afford these CPU, but that's definitely not fun. |
A part of fun from collecting CPU is take the challenge of discover good stuff from a big pile. _________________ Want List

I'm 33 and started collecting in the late 1990s when I was given a small number of 386 and 486 cpus from a local computer shop. About the same time there was a second hand computer parts shop in Perth that had a very nice cpu collection in a glass cabinet in the shop. This is what got me started. A lot of my chips came from computers thrown out in kerbside rubbish collections. When I first started to look through these rubbish piles, there were many 8086, 386 and 486s being thrown out.

Current CPU prices are still much much higher than what they used to be. I just found some old emails from 2005.
In 2005, I bought a Pentium II 266 MHz ES for $0.50 and a P2 300 MHz ES for $1.50. |
I think a lot of this is that more and more people know what the rare chips are. ES used to be just another old chip. Now more buyers and sellers recognise them.
For example, I bought a Pentium 133 Overdrive for about $10 some years ago (with help from Windmiller - thank you, wherever you are!), now they are selling for over $100.
If you want some fun reading, have a look at threads in the for sale forum from 10 years ago and see how cheap things went for then!

This is true. There are two ways to get the cpus you want - spend a lot of money to get them now, or spend a lot of time hunting for them in obscure places like scrap lots. Neon_WA was very good at doing this! _________________ General failure reading disk in drive A

this is such a good thread in recent years, the most attended I believe.
I would not talk something about prospect of CPU collecting. because we will see, the time will witness.
at last, I think we CPU collectors should thinks to Peter for his wonderful CPU-Galaxy websites which has brought more new collectors here. _________________ My vintage CPU collection:www.cpumuseum.com

I started collecting back in 2008 when I was in high school. The first chips I got was a R80286 and a Cyrix CX486. I'm an electronics enthusiast, and old technologies always fascinates me. That's why I started collecting.
Now my focus is going towards boards and complete machines rather than individual chips. I think a CPU is only complete with surrounding components, and is only alive if we power it up. And I enjoy taking things apart. Moreover, you can usually get rare chips on boards or machines rather than from individual sales, because the seller doesn't know the value. Although it's difficult to find ES with boards or machines, the process of searching is still very fun. _________________ Tracing 4004 all over the world |

I think the "new age" will not have interest in 4004 -8008 chips OR older ones... They just don't look worthy or cool. They do have historical value but who cares abut history nowadays.
Do you think CPU era will end soon? new technology etc? _________________ !Ch@nge_Me! |

end/no end, nowadays CPUs looks horrible comparing with the old ones... just a small chip, green or black, or covered with metal, no eye pleasure..
there's no wonder many collectors wont collect new CPUs... you end up having 100+ different CPUs all looking exactly the same (for example - sk 775 - pentiums, celerons, xeons, dual core , pentium D, core duo, quad core- no difference between them).. no need to tell about phones/tablets CPUs...
for me its obvious its a kind of end for the CPUs as we know them.. and we'll be trapped in the past looking at some shiny white ceramic gold cap CPU ... _________________ https://www.facebook.com/CPUCollectionRO |

So, what was the initial thread for?
Well, that’s not the end of the IC collector’s era. That was just a normal eBay “glitch”. Some people weren’t aware of, some didn’t have time to participate, and so on.
By the way, I was lucky to win that auction.
Never had hope for such result. IMO there was no other collector very interested in the board acquisition, so there was no big collision to produce high results. |
