Fakes are a part of collecting, no matter what you collect. But some of the fakes become collectable in there own right, as a curious insight into the genre.
The problem comes when fakes are sold as the real thing, or when someone cant spot a fake.

Why are you so mad with TCP package on PGA adaptor? There are PLCC package on PGA adaptor, QFP package on PGA adaptor, everyone is collecting them, are they fakes too?
The gold cover is for heat spreading purpose, and this chip marked clearly that it's a Tillamook.
What are your problems? |

The speed is faked. Its probably a 233 or 266, not a 300.
Pinkie has opened a 200...

I have a general problem with fakes:
A guy (who has nothing to do) makes a fake P1. For a test he sells it on ebay. He earns 100$ for "a never seen P1". Ten other guys (who also have nothing to do) do the same...
The end of the story is, that we have lots of fakes in our collection, although we want to collect the originals.
Who of you, has a fake BMW in the garage and shows this off??? "Yeah, i have a fake BMW in my garage, and you?" -> This it sh..t !!
The same thing is with CPUs, but in antother price range. (And NOT in the garage)

There are two different fakes we are talking about here.
Fake type 1 Made at the same time as the original chip to cheat the customer och perhaps pc manufacturer selling a chip marked with a higher speed than it actually is.
A part of chip/computer technology history. No problem collecting. (For example in coin or stamp collecting there are similar fakes that is highly collectable)
Fake type 2 Made to cheat a collector in present time. Have we seen or suspected that these exists?
Should not be bought or collected.

I haven't seen anyone purposely made a fake processor to cheat collectors. These chips are old stock and have been 10 years old. There is a difference.
So the topic has changed from package to speed. Apprently it's the speed that motivate that. It's a common trick that use laptop processors for overclocking. I saw one post in this forum that almost everyone is overclocking. You push the demand of overclocking cooling systems, motherborads, etc. When finally a overclocking processor comes out, then someone said "hey, it's not right."
You guys do have a sense of humor.  |
