OK, we are not getting very far here, I wasn't looking for a discussion but suppose I got one.

If you look and ground breaking news - when Processor broke the 100MHz Barrier, When they broke the 1GHz, 2Ghz and 3Ghz barrier....
never anything mege flip flops or whatevr they are!

All those annoucements never really meant much they were just marketing speel. MIPS and FLOPS (Million instructions per second / Floating point Operations Per Second) used to be a great way of measuring the raw performance of a CPU but today its not everything.

With so many special instructions, large caches and various pipelining techniques its hard to rate a CPU's performance now without running multiple operation benchmarks. They usually involve real world tests, such as divx mp3 encoding, DVD decoding etc.

One of the best simple tests for processor performance is a program called Super PI. This program calculates PI to 1 million or more places and gives you the time you did it in. Simply put the faster you can score on Super PI the faster your CPU is.

I have attached Super PI to this post so you can give it a go for yourself.

i prefer the benchmarks that are based on msdos jejjj (like speed system test 32 or cpubench). i think they're better but they have the problem that can handle only 1 cpu

Nice post. I've seen it talked about several times in various places but never looked at it.

I just looked in the text file with it, and it says:

Quote:
it takes within 3 days with Pentium 90MHz, 40MB main memory and
340MB available storage

For 33.55 million digits. That's pretty impressive really - I guess on my Sempron 2600+ it should only take a few hours, I should be able to set it up before I go to bed and it'll be half way through by the time I realise I can't sleep because I want to see the output Smile

Now I understand how it's good for benchmarking - easy to see if one computer is faster than another for this sort of calculation when it takes days on a P90 (and presumably it'll take an hour even on the fastest PC...))

On my Athlon 64 3400+ It take around 40 seconds to generate PI to 1 Million places.

Then maybe my Sempron won't take as long as I expect to generate 33.55 million places - the maximum stated for this app Smile

This perhaps is not a good test, as it is a bit OS specific. the time it takes depends on what tasks the O S switches in and out while its running.

It is a little OS specific, however since everyone should be running more or less the same operating system it even things out a little.

The real hardcore overclockers shut down every task and service that isnt needed before running the tests.

Why are we using Super Pi?

Pi Fast is much better (it does 1 million digits in 8.63 seconds on my 1.7 GHz Pentium 4).
