|
|
Do someone know where we could find a LIF to ZIF socket adapter for PGA 386 and 387? I have some 386 I would like to test with and without a 387, but I would never take the risk to insert some (NOS or rare) in a LIF socket, as all my attempts to withdraw a CPU from a LIF socket always bent irreversibly some pins!
The only thing I found is this: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/386-zif-socket-adapter/
But I am not ready to spend 2 x €65 just to have something that should be worth $5, especially if it doesn't work out of box... _________________ Stelo.xyz Museum (CPU Collection and more) |

Thanks ! I hope the sizes will be Ok though (pin spacing, radius of the holes) but I suppose that such sizes are standardized.
Did not have the idea to search for a 14 x 14 = 196 pin socket... Searches for 386 or 132 pins ZIF sockets gave absolute 0 results.
Still very expensive because it seems that we can find other sockets for just $5 but that's well better than €65, and the quantity seems to be very limited. I'll give it a try (but not for soon as I don't currenty have access to my 386 machine). _________________ Stelo.xyz Museum (CPU Collection and more) |

But is this for PCB mounting or is it actually an adaptor socket (I'm thinking wether or not the pin's diameter is large enough?) |

It's for pcb mounting but you can plug it to socket too.
And zif is much handier than lif.
387-compatible lif sockets are also exist!

Yes, but they are not even lif no point to use it over the motherboard one. |

Thanks everyone!
The size seems not to be for 386s. This is a 17 x 17 socket and 386s are 14 x 14. But else it could be a good economical option.
Hmm, as pointed out by frag_, this would be a LIF -> LIF adapter, so it would not be very useful for me. But I just bought this for the 387s: http://www.ebay.com/itm/391612637052
I just hope the pins will be solid enough so I can change some times the motherboard to test different frequencies. I should ask the seller if he has more.
This one seems to be very nice, but where can we actually buy this? My searches just give me a bunch of datasheets, and I found only one site which sell them, and it's for more than €40 each (except if I buy many, many). Did you order yours here?
And adapter like this and for this price would be ideal. Unfortunately, the size is not correct (but it seems that a 486 would fit here, so it can be very cool for 486 LIF sockets). _________________ Stelo.xyz Museum (CPU Collection and more) |

Nice Amp Socket for 486s. I bought a couple. |
Ok, thanks!
If I happened to get one day the ultimate 80386DX motherboard for testing (something as good as the PC Chips M321 Rev 2.7 I have, but with clock support from 12 to 33 or 40 MHz with jumpers or removable quartz oscillator, as this motherboard only supports 33 and 40 MHz), I would consider in buying one.
So it seems it's for the moment the less expensive adapter suitable for PGA 386s... So I bought one. Because the shipping price to me is just crazy, it will first sleep some time at AVICC.
Thanks again everyone! _________________ Stelo.xyz Museum (CPU Collection and more) |

It's quite an ordeal for me. I have a board that has a CPU socket and another that has jumpers to change the CPU clock, but none that could do both... it's either soldered CPU or a fixed 40MHz clock. *sigh* I've tried a few candidates but they were unstable or completely dead |

Ok, so I received and tested this adapter. I had just to bend one pin to insert it. Unfortunately, its pins are too small so it doesn't properly grip the LIF socket when inserted (in fact, doesn't at all, as the LIF socket were a permanently opened ZIF). So obviously a working 386 did not work with this adapter, and I guess I'll have to get the luxurious €40 socket (but I don't even know if the pins will have the right size).
Maybe it would work with another motherboard but not the one I tested
Thanks again everyone for the suggestions _________________ Stelo.xyz Museum (CPU Collection and more) |
