My Toshiba NB200 netbook has an Intel Atom N280 cpu.

- the Atom N280 is a BGA437 package as is the Atom 330...but it will require special tools to swap them.

- the N280 is a 32bit single-core while the 330 is a 64bit dual-core...nice!

- the Total Power Dissipation TPD of the N280 is 2.5W while the TPD of the 330 is 8W.

- the comparison tables state that the N280 has Intel Enhanced Speed Step Technology but that the 330 DOES NOT !

Does anyone know if the 330 has any kind of speed stepping at all ?

I need to know if the 330 would run at full speed and hence full power dissipation all of the time, or does it in fact have some kind of speed stepping ie maybe a more primitive version...just not the enhanced one ?

Cheers...

As far as I know, the BGA packages are soldered directly to the board, unfortunately.

Yes, you're correct, but with BGA reworking tools and skills, it is doable.

It will not work for various reasons :
- VRM on the motherboard will probably not be able to handle a 3x increase in power consumption
- UEFI/BIOS probably don't include the microcode/initialization code for another CPU model
- Pinout for a Dual Core CPU might be different (especially on NC/Power lines)
