It looks a lot like a Y2K compliance card. These overrode the built in BIOS and RTC to provide one that wouldn't have any issues come 2000. The letters NSTL on the sticker on the card, and the words "support millennium and beyond" make this the most likely possibility to my mind. At the time, the National Software Testing Laboratories developed a standard for Y2K compliance testing, and many manufacturers produced cards which claimed to provide compliance with the standard.
It's possible though that it was included in the system for another reason. I also see that the rechargeable BIOS battery that would normally come with this motherboard (next to the keyboard socket) has been removed. That is often done by collectors so the board doesn't become ruined by the battery leaking (as was very common with the rechargeable BIOS batteries of the day). But it is also possible that the battery leaked back when the board was in use, and using this add-on card was the fix for that - providing a Real Time Clock (available as an add-in card as not all computers back then had one), and replacing the BIOS/providing Y2K compliance as a side effect. |
