It also is a nice disguingishing feature between regular users and newbies. Who to introduce.

Adds colour and rank to the forums - I like it - I use it in other forums too.

I think there is another measurement for older members.

It is generally used to increased traffik on the site.

It is a harmless extra, which does not take much to turn on.

It often results in being elitist and a bit "cliquey*"

I personally dont like all the information displayed under the avatar. I would prefer to only have my Location on display. Does this site need more help in attracting members? From the looks of ebay, loads of sellers are linking or referencing cpu world info pages.

Since we dug up this old thread I would like to add something totaly unrelated to penis length (this should make debs happy as all this penis measurement kinda leaves her out.) I have never found the search engine to be worth a damn. I am constantly trying to use it to find old threads on chips I am researching but it always returns millions or resualts across all forums most of which have nothing to do with what I am researching. I am one of the few non programers of the group but I think their must be a better way of better sorting the hits so that more germain threads come up first. Can the search engine be improved?

Well, what if I make it so that collectors who want to have user ranks will see them, while everybody else won't see them, and possibly won't see the number of posts and joined date? Everybody will be able to turn user ranks on or off in their member profile.

Marcin Majewski wrote:
I propose rank users same as processors : first processor was 4 bit so newbie user is 4 bit Smile 8, 16, 32 and last 64 bit

In this case we need to start from 1 bit (Motorola MC14500), then 2 bit (Intel 3002),and so on...

I have next suggest. Will not be a problem and much time to change search engine propeties ? Quick search is better when it search keywords in section when user is. I mean when I opening trade/sale forum and trying to search Pentium 133 I got results from all forums.

I'll add it to my list of things to do.

I doubt I can improve it. Not because I don't know how to do it, but mainly due to lack of time. As a workaround use Google. To search for 'Intel 80486' in the forum search on Google for:

Intel 80486 site:www.cpu-world.com/forum/

i.e. add "site:www.cpu-world.com/forum/" to every search in Google.

I have to agree with JAC also. We dont need to have ranks. We are all collectors, isīnt that enough?

The downside with ranks is that you usually get alot of "posthunting". Nonsense posts like "yes" "i know" "wow" and so just to go for that higher rank but does not ad anything to the conversation. I have been in forums for (omg!) along time and seen this several times where ranks have been enabled.

Edit: Spelling

I give up from this forum suggestion Sad

Chips number isn't accurate idea for me because how we will count it ? Most of collectors collect x86 CPUs, others only CPUs, others CPUs & FPUs etc.

hummm....... Laughing
I'm late coming in this one...dunno what to say yet other then, the whole forum becoming a "military ranking firm" isn't my cup of tea ! But, showing off how many CPU/FPU...whatever people have in their collection/s would be neat !

I'm inclined to agree with that, although for different reasons.

Two people could have a box full of exactly the same PCUs, and to one it could be a box full of 10 different processors and the other may think of it as 100 different processors, simply because some of us see different revisions of the same processor as being different processors, whereas others see different revisions that have the same speed as being the same.

For example, would A80502100 SX963 be the same as SX970, SY007 and SY046? I say not, but some would say they are. Also, do the different FAB placnts count as different? Some say yes some say no. Hence two collectors with exactly the same chips may give them a different count of the number of different chips, making it an unreliable measure.
