|

I'm having trouble getting my Windows 10 Pro 64-bit computers to see each other with the default networking settings. Had no trouble with Windows 7 64-bit. I changed some settings, which I think make it less secure, and one of them can now see the other and itself, but the second system can't even see itself on the network. Both computers are connected directly to the cable router, and can get online without any issues.
Any ideas on what might be the problem? _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

My thought is your windows 7 may be using SMB 1.0, which has been removed from Windows 10 in the latest update.
So if you remove it from all machines, they have to use SMB 2 or 3 which is (I think) supported in all versions from Vista and up.
See this to remove SMB1:
https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/filecab/2016/09/16/stop-using-smb1/
Let me know it that helps... or if all your PC's are Windows 10?
You may have a win 10 machine using SMB1 that is not updated which is possible.

Can you describe the setup?
How many machines? are they all on the same network subnet? |

Both PCs are clean installs of Windows 10 with all updates. For my retro systems I put all needed software on CDs or floppies. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Can you ping from one W10 machine to the others?
let me know if you know how to ping from cmd prompt or not.
Are you having trouble browsing from the windows file browser in the network section? |

As I say, one computer can now see itself and the second computer on the network, the second computer can't even see itself. They can both see the router and internet. I don't know how to ping local computers, only internet sites. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

You may need to set the sharing settings:
Here:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Centre\Advanced sharing settings
In the Turn on network Discovery (in the Private Network section) with automatic connection box ticked on both PC's. Also turn on File and printer sharing.
You may need to create a home group...
Also it could be a firewall issue...
The best way to fix these problems if you get stuck is to google !!

They are both set up that way. That's what I don't understand. With identical settings, PC1 can see both, PC2 can't even see itself. It's not a massive problem, but I would like to figure it out before I connect other PCs. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Ping...
Same as intent site but use the other PC's IP address.
Example:
type in command prompt:
ping 192.168.0.2
The "192.168.0.2" needs to be the IP if the other PC.
To ping indefinitely until you interrupt with escape add a /t in the ping command for trouble shooting.
"ping /t 192.168.0.2"
To get the IP address of the other machine type "ipconfig" in it's command prompt. it is the IPV4 address. |

Wired. I don't use wireless as it's too easy to hack. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Check SMB 1 is not ticked in the add remove windows features settings area... in the "control panel" >>Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features >> then "Turn Windows features on or off".
Win10 can be difficult to get the network sharing going... I have had similar issues with it too you are not alone there...
What are the IP's of each machine? These should be addresses you router hands out and are not accessible from the internet.. from ipconfig command in the command prompt on each PC. |

I unchecked SMB 1.0 on the PC that couldn't see itself, and it can now see itself and the other PC. Thanks. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Great job Debs,,, he he...
It is a good feeling when you solve one of these problems...
A couple of months ago random PC's on our work network stopped being able to browse the network which is why I suspected the SMB 1.0 issue...
It took me 3 whole days to work out the issue.. finally when I tried to telnet to the share by cmd prompt there was an error message in the actual command prompt about SMB 1.0 being required by the share... turned out windows creator update turned off SMB1 on mu PC.... without me knowing of course.
Micro$oft decided to remove the default of SMB being turned on due to security issues finally (it has been superseded for 12 years)..
It can be enabled as a feature if required for legacy compatibility...
It is annoying they did not put out an alert that this was getting turned off..
Anyway, I am glad I could help you. |
