is it an engineering sample or just some fancy naming?

ES2 was a one off custom semiconductor fabricator (European Silicon Structures) that went defunct about 30 years ago. As they primarily prototyped for others (the chips would later be fabricated cheaper in bulk elsewhere) the chip is also very likely (by a happy accident, rather than any naming convention) to be an engineering sample.

See updated comment with corrections and more detail. I had some memories about ES2, but probably should have done some quick checking to fill in the blanks before posting. In any case you have something quite rare I think. Only a small number of chips would be made per order, none should have ended up in commercial products, and ES2 weren't in business for that long.
