Do all ES processors have the ability to be overclocked to more than 5GHz?
I'm curious, as I have a Haswell ES (Xeon E5, base frequency of 2.1 GHz) and a Sandy Bridge ES (Xeon E5, base frequency of 1.6 GHz).

What programs do I use to overclock the CPU anyways?

My goal is to achieve more than 8 GHz with a Xeon ES. If not, I'll buy a Pentium 4 ES and overclock it.

Any information is appreciated!

There is no guarantee that any ES will overclock better than it's retail counterpart, but some ES have unlocked multiplier, so should clock well.

Is there a clock limit on those CPUs? I have a Xeon E5 v3 ES with an A0 stepping. Could that be overclocked to 8GHz?

This thread made me lol.

8GHz is a totally unrealistic overclock on 99.9% of any CPU you choose.
I can only think of maybe half a dozen or less processors that have a shot and even those would be LN2 cooled.

None of them were Xeon's BTW.

Another fun overclocking fact:
99% of retail chips overclock better than ES's.

What ES processor would you suggest then? I want to break that 8GHz barrier. Could a Sandy Bridge i7 ES do it?

And also, why unrealistic? Why can't a Xeon go over 8GHz?

Are you a LN2 bencher?

No, but I'm willing to buy a LN2 pot and the liquid nitrogen itself.

You need a lot of knowledge about overclocking, a close partnership with a motherboard manufacturer and a lot of money to reach 8 GHz.

Only Netburst (Pentium 4) and K15 (AMD FX) can reach more than 8 GHz. It's 100% impossible with other architecture.

lol

You're going in over your ski's.
I'll indulge you though.

s775 Cedarmill cores will be your cheapest and best shot.

AMD has a few others.

EDIT- DOH! xsecret beat me in.

Alright, a Cedarmill Pentium 4? And for sure LN2 cooling? Liquid cooling won't work? What's a good sSpec Cedarmill to use?

Also, just curious: Why can't a Xeon be overclocked that high? Too many cores?

Liquid you shoot for 5GHz.

Even on LN2 8GHz is very rare.

So what's the limiting factor in overclocking? Is it like a turbocharger on a car, where the engine begins to overheat? The processor can't go directly to 8GHz, it gradually gets there?

Also, is 6GHz or high 5 GHz reasonable on a Sandy Bridge i7 with air cooling?

No. Sandy you shoot for 5 GHz on air. Probably won't get there.

BTW, just so you don't think I'm talking out my ass.....

Limiting factor in overclocking is the architecture of the processor mostly. There are a bunch of other factors......including luck of the draw.

"Running in" a CPU has very rarely made a lot of difference, though it has been seen, at least back in the late 90's - early 2000's

ES's are probably less willing to reach extreme frequencies as they are often early steppings of the core.

About maximum frequency, as Mr.Scott mentions, the architecture is the most limiting factor, that is because of the physical properties of the millions of transistors making up the CPU core, the total size of the core etc. (at +5 GHz, the speed of light is actually a limitation, as the clock distribution within several milimeters of silicon actually delays enough to cause clock skew, thus asynchronity).

So I just realized I have a processor and motherboard that I can use to do extreme overclocking. I have an AMD FX-6300, along with a MSi motherboard. Should I buy a decent cooler first before attempting to push into 5GHz? Base speed is 3.5 GHz. This processor was meant for overclocking, so I don't think architecture should be an issue.

The only issue is cooling. I have a stock cooler, and a decent air cooler on my i5-8400. What's the danger frequency with an air cooler? 6GHz?
