There is collector demand obviously, but also they didn't sell well at the time, so there aren't many to go around.
There was nothing wrong with them per se - actually they were quite advanced for the time, but this was a time of expensive computers, so Overdrives and CPU only replacements were quite common as upgrades, and your upgrade path was a big consideration when purchasing a PC. But Nexgen chips used their own socket (everyone else at the time was making socket 3 or 5 with overdrives available to bridge the two), so they were more expensive to upgrade to (always needed at least a new MB), and it was uncertain what upgrade options there would be for them in the future. That made them unpopular to all but those on the bleeding edge with lots of money and a willingness to gamble on something new.
AMD bought the company and quickly announced the development of the K5 on socket 5, fueling speculation that the Nexgen socket would be killed off, exacerbating the sales problem. |

Nx586 was in production for 2 years between early 1994 and early 1996. It was the only real competitor to Intel Pentium, whether Socket 4 or 5, because AMD K5 and Cyrix 6x86 were released in 1996. NexGen didn't get much sales, so their hardware is more rare, say, than Socket 4 Pentium based. _________________ My Active Sales |

Name it like you want but ambition of constructors to rival with Intel was impressive. So many changes in x86 architecture was done in NexGen it well-deserved for name of NextGeneration processor. Next takeover by AMD and used in K6 core. And many more. Also they are collectors eye-candies. Absolutely top-notch on my want list. mtx500 is an expert of NexGen and he should write a book of it _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

Marcin: Sorry, I'm not good in writing lengthy texts. It takes me forever and is a pain. I'm better in writing lengthy programs And in explaining things in direct speach. I can only say: I have much more material than is on my website (http://www.memotech.franken.de/NexGen/), so if there are NexGen-related questions, feel free to ask. As I am very busy, it may take a while until I answer, though. |

Hi mtx500, would it happen to know if PF models run on VLB motherboard as well, or just on PCI ones? Started a thread at http://www.cpu-world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31430, so any tips would help me as a new & happy owner of a working Nexgen system. Looking forward to learn more about it.
Thanks |

PF100 runs at 93MHz and PF110 at 102MHz. The VESA bus runs at half the core speed, that's 46.5MHz and 51MHz respectively. A bit too much. _________________ My Active Sales |
