Try using ME_cleaner. |
That is only effective on pre-Nehalem, later chips it can't remove the boot routines of ME which are what handles the processor checking.

Nah it can still disable boot problems with incompatible chips. I did some testing with my QL32 Xeon which can't run on mainstream chipset boards without modding ME.
OP can try setting the HAP bit with Intel FIT but I'm not sure what the success rates of that on nehalem. |

I got my hands on another pga989 laptop with a 50-series chipset.
It's an Asus ROG G53J.
I popped the CPU in, and the unit powers up for about 1-2 seconds with the capslock and numlock leds lighting up, followed by the unit turning off.
The fan does not seem to spin when the lights are on, however, when the unit shuts down, the fan spins briefly.
I haven't tried ME_cleaner yet. Do I need the chip flasher in order to write the modified bios, or can I use the Asus flash utility? |

You need the chip flasher. Follow this guide here: https://www.win-raid.com/t4287f16-GUIDE-The-Beginners-Guide-to-Using-a-CH-A-SPI-Programmer-Flasher-With-Pictures.html
You may also have to add the correct microcodes to the BIOS. |

Don't laptop allow you to update the BIOS using software, the same way PCs do?

Yes, but flashing the ME region through software is unreliable. |

Since I now have all three chips to compare, here's a scan of an Arrandale, Auburndale, and the mystery QGFK.
Looks like it's using the same sized chips as the larger die on the Auburndale. Maybe it was an attempt at making a quad-core in a similar way to the Core 2 Quads? Might have also just been a mech sample.
