|

I put this in off-topic since it's not really CPU-related, but being a really rare engineering sample of computer hardware I figured lots of folks here would be interested. A seller from China has a working ATi Radeon MAXX engineering sample listed on eBay. From some research it seems one of these popped up on eBay back in 2002 and may have sold on the cheap, but this seller clearly knows what they have. I had heard ATi was working on one of these, but I've never seen pictures of it. Very cool!

I'm attaching an image so it can stay here after the eBay link goes dead. |

They actually aren't Rage 128 cores. It has two Radeon R100 GPUs on it, but the heatsinks say Rage 128. It's a Radeon version of the Rage 128 MAXX. Given the board layout it looks like ATi was trying to use the same alternating frame technique they used with the Rage Fury MAXX, since both GPUs connect directly to the AGP bus. So they probably decided to cancel it after they couldn't get it working on any OS besides Win9x. Anyone who spent big money on this card and couldn't use it in Windows 2000/XP would have been very unhappy.
On further googling, there are a few pictures of these around. Some look identical, others have TSOP memory packages instead of the SGRAM on this sample. |

If only a Rage Fury Maxx was affordable, I would love one .. It would be SO cool on a maximum-spec'ed BP6 having a dual GPU graphics adapter as well |

Yup, I bought 4 400's last year, hoping that 2 of them will run 600 Hopefully I have 3 x 256 MB DIMMS of the right type that the BX will accept. Oh, yeah, and 2 Golden Orbs lying in my locker at work, waiting to be modified as: http://www.bp6.com/orbs/ .. Can't wait .. Only waited some 6-8 years since I got the idea
I'm also considering a Matrox m3d (mostly because I had one back in the days) |

Your specification sounds interesting. Maybe we make a thread with our retro/project old computers ? _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

Nice article! It is pretty funny that both the fake Voodoo5 6000 and that Radeon MAXX are up on eBay at the same time. |
